A Few Reasons Why Dogs Make Wonderful Companions for Older Adults

Laura Seeber
In a way, dogs are truly wonderful creatures. While we're young, they teach us responsibility, they offer a playmate when all your friends are away on vacation, and they're always there to lend a friendly paw in all your activities. But what happens when we get older? That bond that we find playing with dogs as children can still serve us just as well as we get older. In fact, possibly one of the best times to have a dog for a companion is when a person reaches their golden years. Here are a few advantages and reasons why having a furry friend can be a great benefit for an older adult.

Consistent Companionship

An unfortunate truth of getting older is our life long friends and families don't come around as often as they did before. There can be many reasons for this; they could have moved away, or their lives could be filled with the more mundane things of family life such as school, doctor appointments, even the common soccer practice. A dog however, is always there, offering both a sounding board and companionship to its owner. Of course, a dog cannot replace true human interaction, having a pet can be a great source of companionship.

Consistent Exercise

Another truth of getting older is that exercise can take a back seat. While slowing down is normal as a person ages, numerous scientific studies indicate that the more a person stays active and exercises, the more full and enjoyable their years will be. How does having a dog help? Simple; dogs love to be outside and go for walks. In addition, many people chose to train their dogs to relieve themselves outside. Having a dog gives an older adult a reason to get outside, walk around, and get a little exercise. Of course, it is always essential that you check with your doctor concerning any exercise program, but for most people a walk around the block with a dog is a great start.

Protection

Dogs, as a rule, are usually very protective of those who chose to take them in and take care of them. This is yet another reason why dogs can make a great companion for older adults. In today's world, older Americans are often viewed as easy targets for break-ins, muggings, even more serious crimes. Besides taking common sense precautions such as letting people know where you're going, having secure locks on the door, and making sure the property is well lighted, many law enforcement agencies recommend having a dog on the property to scare away potential intruders. While a dog shouldn't be your only source of security, it can be a very helpful addition.

A Great Way to Meet People

Surprised? You shouldn't be. Dog owners as a whole are usually very sociable and friendly people. In many cities and towns, there are 'dog parks' where dogs can run in fenced in areas to get a lot of exercise. In the meantime, their owners often sit down and start talking and interacting. While a love of dogs might bring them together, often dog owners will find other areas of similar interests and the chance of becoming fast friends is always a possibility.

These are just a few of the reasons why having a dog is something that every older adult should consider. Not only will owning a dog enrich your life, but it definitely will enrich the life of the dog you chose as your companion.
