You're first and most obvious choice is going to have to be Superman. The guy can level mountains, has gone toe to toe with some big time baddies. Then again, Batman, for what he lacks in physical power, makes up for with brains.
And as we have seen in the past, (The Dark Knight Returns) Batman, given enough time and planning, actually beat Superman. So here is my take...
The darkness of the night finds illumination from the moon and intermittent flashes of lightning surging into the atmosphere. The slow rumble of thunder helps to muffle the traffic on the streets below. The impending storm is Heaven's way to introduce the combatants.
Perched motionless atop Gotham City's tallest structure, Wayne Towers, stands the Dark Knight. His flowing cape rides the wind currents. His cowl reveals only white pupil less eyes and his stony profile. He awaits his opponents arrival. He knows his opponent won't be late.
On foot commuters making their way home have no idea what has passed by them on the streets. They can only feel a gust of wind that pushes ladies dresses up and knocks the hats off of the men in trenchcoats. A faint streak of crimson and blue is seen by a few of the more attentive commuters. The Man of Steel is making his way from Metropolis to the unforgiving streets of Gotham City. This is Bruce's town, he knows it. He also knows where he will be able to find his former friend.
Superman touches down on the gravel rooftop flawlessly. Another rumble of thunder accompanies his landing. He takes no time to see the outline of pointed ears and flowing cape. "It doesn't have to be like this Bruce!"
The Caped Crusader stands in silent stoicism. "Always the strong silent type, eh Bruce?" The Last Son of Krypton strides towards Batman. A clap of thunder again is doled out by the heavens. Before the rumble exits the sky, Superman is stopped in his tracks by a flash of light.
Superman's extraordinary olfactory quickly recognizes magnesium. A flare. The belt. Batman and is utility belt score first. As Superman's sight begins to correct itself and he continues forward, his feet are locked by two clamps taking refuge around his boots. Suddenly the Man of Steel is hit by a surge of electricity. The lights on 4 city blocks flicker. Street lights have shut off and are now trying to regain their illumination. Superman is being electrocuted. The smell of burning hair starts to fill the air. His fingertips begin to blacken.
The surge ends and Superman iseft on one knee. He is beginning to become angry. Before he is completely able to regain his senses, Batman is on the move. With one smooth movement, Batman launches a set of Batarangs into the air heading straight towards Superman. The still wobbling Man of Steel braces for their impact as his condition will not allow him to dodge the entire barrage. Instead of a strike, the Batarangs, with timed precision, release a payload of gas. Five separate clouds of haze condense into one large cloud around the Kryptonian's head. The burning smell of mace enters Superman's nose and infects his lungs. Not the sort of attack that will take Superman out but it is one that keeps him disoriented and reeling if only for a few more seconds.
Batman is using those seconds to the best of his ability. He has begun to swing from his grapple line towards his enemy. The seconds he thought he had are quickly erased when Clark snatches his foot in midair. Superman has recovered and sends Batman flying into the support structure for the Wayne Tower's 'W'.
Batman's spine takes the brunt of the impact. He praises himself for including his heavier armor tonight. His knees and hands help to cushion the fall from the top of the 'W'. As he looks up, Superman is now in front of him. "Now I'm in trouble" thinks the Caped Crusader. Superman lands a punch to Batman's jaw that sends the detective across the gravel. His jaw is shattered. "He must be holding back" runs through Batman's mind. If he wasn't, Batman would not have kept his head connected to his body.
"I held back Bruce. It doesn't have to be like this!"
Batman goes for the belt. His ever present safety net, his utility belt will have an answer.
Superman is on top of him in a blink. He knows about the belt too. With a swift kick, Batman's kneeling body is presented with the gift of a size 13 Kryptonian boot to his midsection. He hears three wet snaps. Clark has managed to crack three of his ribs, even through his impact armor! Get to the belt!
"Are we done yet Bruce?" Go to the belt. "We can end this right now!" Superman's last word is deafened by the sound of more thunder along the skyline. The belt! The Caped Crusader tries to catch some breath, summons his strength, and reaches for the belt. With the same fluid motion from the first time, Batman releases one small capsule. Superman picks the capsule out of the air, between his index finger and thumb. "You're getting desperate now Br...". The capsule explodes. The Man of Steel's face is completely covered in translucent epoxy. The epoxy begins to harden around Supermans face. This trick will only by the Dark Knight a few seconds. Batman scrambles to his
There is a hum of energy growing from behind the epoxy as the translucence gives way to red. Heat vision. Two beams rip into the air freeing his eyes. With his strength, he is able to render the remaining pieces over his nose and mouth to shreds.
His hearing picks up the sound of two objects approaching. Objects are closer than he thinks. The first explodes at his feet. The blue haze of freon surrounds the Kryptonians legs as ice forms around his feet and boots. Superman is momentarily trapped! The second object lands in front of him as well. This object unleashes a sonic shrill that puts cracks on adjacent building's windows.
The Man of Steel writhes in agony. His nose releases a slow trickle of blood. He flexes his legs and the block of ice around his feet is blown into ice shards. Superman is now in the air. Another round of heat vision dispatches the sonic grenade 15' below him and takes care of two more objects coming towards him. A gust of his superbreath blows Batman into the air. Superman meets his former friend in the air. His steel grip anchors Batman 20' in the air. Batman's hands wrap themselves around Supermans forearm.
"Out of tricks yet?"
Batman's left hand let's go of Superman's forearm. He cocks his hand back to expose a nozzle connected to his wrist. A jet of acid streams from the nozzle and hits Superman in face. The Man of Steel let's out a grunt of pain. He flings Batman down to the rooftop. Batman lands on top of an air conditioning unit. The unit explodes with sparks and smoke. Batman is face down.
Superman clears away the remaining acid and descends upon Batman.
"How about now Bruce?" Superman's voice grates at Batmans's nervous system. The ever powerful semi-Deity is flaunting his power.
Superman grabs a handful of Batman's cape in his right hand. Batman's head and neck are angled towards his back. Superman's boot is at the base of his spine. He talks again, "Bruce, say 'uncle'." The belt. One more time.
The Dark Knight Detective sneaks his hand into the last pouch on his belt. He pulls his trump card out. From under the cape a green radioactive glow begins to emanate. Superman's grip starts to loosen. Batman's head and neck again have slack. He breaks the grip and turns over. Now the glow becomes a beacon from atop the skyscraper.
"Uncle."
Superman is immediately weakened. "Where did he get it? How could he have gotten it?" thinks the dying Superman. The only substance on Earth, sent along with Clark's ship, from an exploding planet, that can kill Earth's mightiest superhero. Kryptonite. Superman raises his arms in a futile attempt to black the rocks radiating rays. His arms and legs are weak. His skin cracks and bleeds. His ebony hair turns grey. Superman will be dead soon.
"Like you said Clark, it doesn't have to be this way."With that Bruce Wayne, the Batman, puts the extraterrestrial rock back into it's holding pouch in his belt. "I'm a lot of things Clark, but you know I'm no killer."
And he's gone.
With the Kryptonite gone, Superman's strength returns to his body. His flesh regains it's color and elasticity. He rises, knowing that in his condition, he more than likely won't find Batman and quite honestly doesn't want to. This round goes to Bruce but eventually, Batman will have to come to Metropolis.
