It was a completely unplanned event facilitated by her older brother.
We were living with my parents at the time as we were between homes. We'd taken our three kids - ages 5, 3, and 1 to see the latest Veggie Tales movie (Jonah) and had just gotten back to my parents' home.
My husband and I walked into the kitchen where my parents were sitting and we sat down at the table. The kids stayed in the family room to play but within a minute or two they were very quiet.
I got up to see what was going on and found Mia sitting on the floor with her older brother Kage standing behind her - scissors in hand and a pile of long, blond locks at his feet.
I screamed "Oh my gosh!" in shock. He jumped, threw the scissors under the couch and ran.
Mia just looked at me sweetly. Her hair had been cut at an angle and was cut so short up over one ear it looked like he'd used clippers! She still had a thin, long tail of hair on one side.
I tried to breathe deeply and not make a big deal out of it, although I was really horrified. At three, Mia had always had a head full of long, beautiful blond hair - which now lay on the floor.
My mom had to call her hairdresser and make an appointment for the next day to get the cut "fixed" even though there was no fixing that could be done. The hairdresser had to work with what she had - a very, short, boyish haircut.
As soon as we returned from the hairdresser, the first thing my son said was "Well, she looks like a boy!"
Maybe that was his idea behind the haircut - cut off her hair and turn her into a boy!
