A New Food to Try for Its Health Benefits: Quinoa (a Type of Grain)

Linda M. McCloud

Even if you aren't adventurous when it comes to trying out new foods, you should consider trying quinoa. What is quinoa? It is a type of grain.

What type of grain is it? It is an ancient grain, being that is has been around for over 6,000 years. It was once known as "Gold of the Incas." Inca tribes used to cultivate it in the Andes Mountains.

Quinoa comes in many different colors. Yet, the most popular colors are yellow and black. They are similar to the poppy seed in shape. However, they are a bit bigger.

It can be cooked in a rice cooker or simply boil it onto a stove, with water. For taste, you can add chicken broth to it.

Since it is so easy to prepare, you now may be wondering what the benefits are of eating quinoa. They include:

  • Quinoa is a complete protein. The reason that it is a complete protein is that it contains all of the nine essential amino acids we need per day.
  • Quinoa contains more protein than the popular grains we usually eat. This includes brown rice. A ¼ cup serving of quinoa contains 7 grams of protein.
  • Quinoa is high in polyphenols.
  • A normal serving of quinoa contains 3 grams of fiber.
  • A normal serving of quinoa contains 10% of one's daily requirement of iron.
  • Quinoa is also gluten-free

Since quinoa has all these benefits, you can see why we should all become adventurous and try this grain today. You can use as a replacement for brown rice or you can use it as a breakfast item. If you want to eat it for breakfast, just add berries to give a bit more taste and as a way to add some fruit to your meal.

The first time I heard about this was when my nephew told me about it. I really want to try it.

I keep hearing about it. First from the Food Network, and now you have given it an "A". I like that it is a complete protein, and I can switch up a bit from beans.
