A Fourth Extension of Unemployment Benefits on the Way for New Jersey Residents

J Budd, RN
New Jersey residents collecting unemployment are getting additional help from the Federal Government as of November 6, 2009

As reported on nj.com, President Barack Obama has signed into law a bill that will extend unemployment benefits an additional 14 weeks. The Senate unanimously approved this extension on November 5, 2009 as unemployment creeps closer to 10%, one the highest levels in decades.

New Jersey unemployment is nearing closer to 10% as well. While it is not the state with the highest unemployment rate (that would be Michigan at over 15%), it does qualify for these additional extended benefits. And because New Jersey unemployment is over 8.5%, it qualifies for an additional 6 weeks on top of the 14 weeks just approved today for a total of 20 more weeks of unemployment benefits.

According to the article on nj.com, these additional benefits will not be available until Sunday November 25th 2009. At that time, the state will notify eligible people of these extended benefits and how to apply for them. David Socolow of the NJ Department of Labor and Workforce Development, unemployed persons will need to certify that they have been searching for work for the last two weeks. New Jersey does randomly select unemployment recipients to present proof that they have been looking for employment and have not turned down reasonable work in order to continue to receive additional benefits.

New Jersey and Unemployment Benefits Extension-How does this all work?

As I wrote in a previous article here on Associated Content, extensions on unemployment benefits require no additional paperwork on the part of the recipient. When the initial claim of 26 weeks runs out, the recipient receives a letter in the mail telling them if they qualify for extensions. So far the extension in New Jersey break down this way:

Tier I Benefits: 20 weeks additional
Tier II Benefits: 13 weeks additional
EB (3rd Tier): 20 weeks additional
4th Extension: 20 weeks additional

The initial claim plus these extensions gives out of work New Jersey residents up to 99 weeks of unemployment.

New Jersey and Unemployment Benefits Extension-For those enrolled or enrolling in state approved schooling/training

New Jersey unemployment provides out of work residents with the opportunity receive additional benefits while going back to school for training to make them more marketable in the workplace. These benefits are known as Additional Benefits during Training (ABT). These benefits do not kick in until the initial claim and all extensions are exhausted. If you are unemployed and thinking about heading back to school, make sure you inform your nearest Re-Employment Center of your decision so you can have on your record that you are enrolling in a 'state approved' training program. For more on state approved training and how you may get help to pay for it, read my article here on Associated Content.

Now, I was laid off during my maternity leave and I'm coming to the end of my 1st 20week extention in a month. Does that mean I lose all other extentions since it's after 2/28/2010??

To those of you who think that we are not looking for work and would rather collect unemployment with less money that have made while working, send out tons of resumes (with no responses), fear that we are not able to get work because of the economy, and would rather collect- have never experienced what we are going through. It is depressing for over 1 year to send out over 2,000 resumes and not get any responses, the job market in the graphic design field is saturated. I have gone back to school, am Web Certified and still cant find work. If you have the answer to help get work, please share. I am with 10 headhunters, sent out over 2,000 resumes, have 20 years experience, am 50 years old, am physically fit, and still no work. The unemployment office should help place you with jobs over the phone than all this emailing resumes. Its very discouraging to not get any feedback when emailing tons of resumes. WHAT IS THE SECRET! Perhaps start a new career? I dont know which way to turn. And

I wish the information we received via articles was reliable. The reporters are getting this all wrong. If your Tier 2 ended before 2/28/10 then you get 13 weeks, NOT 20 weeks. And only if there is another extension by 2/28/10 at 4:59PM {?} then the benefits end for all that are on Tier 3 now....there will be NO Tier 4.
People that are working or don't need to work [have husbands that make a paycheck] don't get it. I am a single woman, no family [dead for the past 40 years], never married and no children. So obviously, people like me basically have no help. I can't go back to school since I don't have enough money to carry my mortgage, and can't sell by house [no buyers]. I guess in America, only if you got married, have kids and part of the "family culture" this country has no use for you.

It's very sad that anyone thinks this is a fun time at home while collecting unemployment. This is first time in over 40 years of working(since he had 2 paper routes at age 14), working full time entire time he went to college then working almost 50 hrs week for next 30 some years that my husband has not had a job. He got dumped after almost 30 years of making someone else rich. It's heartbreaking to see him being turned down because of age. He is still willing and able to work. So those that think we are having a grand old time....hopefully you will never know what it is like to be in this position.

My question is what if you do not exhaust teir 111 by 2/28/2010, do you loose all the other extensions

Being on unemployment is like waiting for a death sentence...you know that if there is no job found soon, life as you know it will end, and life as a homeless family will begin. Age discrimination is running rampant despite what the media says. One HR rep was truly honest with me and admitted that I'm not going to get the job due to being a bit too old. I already knew that anyway based on real experiences. Feeling useless and obsolete at 50. I don't know if my brain can handle going back to school after all of these years. *sigh
