The advice I am about to give you will really depend on the experience you are hoping to get with the Statue of Liberty. If you have your heart on visiting Ellis Island and standing next to the Statue of Liberty, then the only way is to stand in the tour line and wait your turn. However, it is possible to get a little closer to the Statue of Liberty without actually going there.
The Staten Island Ferry is located a few blocks from the line for the Statue of Liberty. While this ferry's main purpose is to act as a mode of transportation for commuters, it is also becoming quite popular among tourist. The Ferry is free and offers a great view of the Statue of Liberty. Keep in mind that you are not actually going to the Statue of Liberty Island, but the ferry rides right past it and is close enough to get some great photographs.
Getting on the Staten Island Ferry is very easy. When you arrive to the building where it is located, go inside and up the escalator. Depending on the time of day you may find a large crowd already waiting. No matter how large the crowd is, do not let this discourage you from taking a ride on the ferry. These ferries are large, fit a large number of people, and come every 15 minutes. Even if you do not get on the first ferry, you will not have to wait long for another one to arrive.
Since this is a free service you are not required to purchase a ticket. Simply wait until the large glass doors open and follow the crowd through them. Once on the ferry you will need to go to the doors on the right side of the ship. From this side you will be able to see the Statue of Liberty. Find a place by a clear or open window and wait.
Once the ferry docks on Staten Island, everyone is required to get off. Once you get off the ferry signs will direct you to the waiting room to make your return trip. While getting off and then back on is a hassle, there is only one ferry so it is easy to do.
As you get back on the ferry go to the right side if you would like to get another view of the Statue of Liberty. If you are in the mood for a different view, go to the left. From this side of the ferry you can see the Brooklyn Bridge. This is also a great photo opportunity.
