This is a game a teacher can use more than once during a term or school year to practice different topics. A very useful tool for ESL students to practice forming and asking questions. The lesson plan provided is simple and broad in its topic, of course you could tailor it to suit your specific classroom needs.
This fun ESL game allows the students to walk around the room, which they always like, and talk with the other students - hopefully in English. LESSON PLAN:
1) Pass out the Handouts. Make sure you have teacher copies for yourself. It is best that each ESL student have a unique set of statements as their handout. This is the time consuming part of preparing this lesson, however I have already done this for you. Aren't you lucky!!! I have prepared a complete lesson plan in this article that includes 12 unique handouts, each with 6 fill in the blank statements. For the larger class sizes I simply repeat the handouts, making sure that no more than 4 students have the same statement sheet. By the time they catch on that some of the handouts are the same, they are usually almost finished anyway.
2) Have students write their name on their paper. Do a couple of examples with the students by making up a couple of statements and writing them in the format of the handouts on the board. Then pick a student and walk around with them asking questions as the example. When you find the students who meet the criteria have the first student write their names on the board.
3) Make sure they understand the concept of the lesson.
4) Let students get up and walk around. For a ESL large class size I recommend doing the walk around in 2 or more parts, this keeps the chaos factor down and eats up a few more minutes of class time. Simply divide the ESL class into groups and only allow 1 group to walk around the classroom at a time. Give each group about 5 minutes or less to complete their paper and then switch. The teacher should walk around the classroom to ensure the students are doing the lesson.5) Once they are finished: Have them sit down again. Review the concept of questions that start with "Who".
**Write on the board:
Questions that begin with "Who?" want to know about a specific person and usually have a name in the answer.
6) Have the ESL students stand up in groups according to which handout they received. I do this by saying one of the topics of the statements aloud. "Who has the Pizza Hut paper?", "Raise your hand", "Please stand up".
7) Ask a "who" question for each statement, alternating students to answer. Make sure they read the entire statement not just the name. At this point you can make the ESL lesson more difficult by asking the named student if the statement is true. "Do you really love to eat at Pizza Hut?" This involves more participation and helps students pay more attention to the lesson.
