A Garden Verse: Red Sunflowers

Deb Martin-Webster
Born of seeds sowed and nurtured
massive ruby heads of brightly colored petals emerge
stalks stiffen stretching towards the warmth of the sun
it stands majestic amongst its brethren

Gentle breeze sways them to and fro
taunt to break for a moment then gentles to bend
embraces itself with arm length leaves
graceful reflection of grandeur

Red gendered by birth regal beyond conception
towers proudly in uncomplicated gardens
the sunflowers summer crown
falls quiet into humbled autumn slumber

I'd never seen this color sunflower either. The farmer down the road grew 5 rows of them this summer and I remember thinking how beautiful they were. I wanted to get a photo of them but, he had harvested them all by the time I decided to write this poem. :(
