Stephen's State Park is a picturesque state park located in Hackettstown, NJ. It has many trails and some of them are located along a beautiful river. I went to a save the parks rally there one day because our Governor Jon Corzine had threatened to shut it down along with several other parks.

They don't cost that much to run compared to the $80 plus million dollar park they are building in Trenton and many believe it is the Democrat agenda to hurt the republican counties in the countryside of New Jersey.

Stephen's State Park is beautiful and you can go fishing and hiking and even biking along the trails. It is quite popular, especially on the weekends when they have nature talks and events. While you do need bug spray and even sun block, it is well worth the extra effort to see the ducks and wild chipmunks that inhabit this beautiful park.

I only saw a fraction of it. But there is a picnic area as well. Located conveniently close to Route 46, it is easy to get to and is only a half an hour or so from Morristown NJ. For the avid fisherman, the river is right next to the trails, so you don't have to go far to try to catch some fish. And there are even park benches close to the parking area for those with limited mobility.

The park has been around for quite a while, parents have been bringing their families to this park for years. I am sure there are some interesting birds for the bird watcher to see too. I enjoy going there in the morning before it gets too hot.

The setting is very pretty with lush green vegetation and well kept trails. There is even a play area for children and there are many picnic tables with grills available for bringing charcoal in and having a picnic. No alcohol is allowed in the park. But it is available for groups to get together. And the ranger cabin is usually open for more information.

For a casual hike through, or biking or fishing, enough good things can't be said about Stephen's State Park. Let us hope this beautiful natural treasure will be preserved for generations. And that families can bring their children here and learn the importance of nature and learn self confidence from leading a healthy lifestyle. We need more well maintained parks. Not less.
