A Gift

Scott Bauer
The only gift I have for you is not for me to give away.

I gave it to you once before...you have it with you every day.

I'm not sure where you keep it. But it belongs to you.

I hear it in the words you say, and the loving things you do.

It's better that you have it. It never served me well.

In searches for the heavens, it led me into hell.

It cannot live without you. It was a part of me.

And if you ever break it, then I will cease to be.

You might not realize it's there. It's with you when you sleep.

It lives in you forever like the stars in nighttimes keep.

When age withers us away and time has done its will

I know somehow that you will have possession of it still.

If you gave it back to me I'd toss it to a flame.

A heart once it is broken will never beat the same.
