Birthstones, also known as natal stones, are semi-precious and precious stones that are associated with the plants and/or a person's birth month. They have been used as a guide to harness power associated with a person's ruling planet. This article offers a brief glimpse into the world of birthstones.

1. Legend

In Exodus, the breastplate of Aaron was encrusted with twelve precious stones in rows of four to represent the twelve tribes of the bible. Astrologers assigned precious stones to various plants based on its color hoping to influence any forces associated with the plant, thus giving way to the zodiac list of birthstones.

2. Luck

It was and is a common belief that wearing a birthstone during the person's birth month they would have an increase in their luck.

3. Lists

Originally, birthstones were associated with the zodiac and planets, but are now associated with birth months, which lends to both the traditional and modern chart of birthstones - the first recognized listed was in 1912 by the American Gemology Society. In Ayurvedic medicine and Mystical practices, birthstones help protect the wearer. The lists only vary slightly and oftentimes have the same birthstone.

4. Healing

To people who practice crystal healing and Ayurvedic medicine, it is believed that wearing of the birthstone will help the body heal naturally as well as working in connection with other crystals. The healing will be increased during the birth month.

5. Color

Many birthstones come in many variations of the same color or be a different color entirely, but are still classified as a the same birthstone (such as a sapphire or topaz). Although, the color many be different, the birthstone will remain the same in name.
