A Good Fishing Rod and Reel for a Child

Rod and Reel Easy Enough for a Two Year Old

Shawn Zapalac
I have had the time to enjoy fishing with my young freind of two years old, Jordan Liner. Jordan has a canal behind his home in Houma, Louisiana where we have some pretty fun days. Some days that take me back and remind me why I started fishing. Over the years I have had some big fishing trips as a charter captain and tournament fisherman. But I don't think I've had as much fun as catching freshwater perch with Jordan lately.

When I was two or three I started with the old Johnson spincast reels with my Grandpa. When I was about five I remember getting my own Zebco 202 combo that was all black. Getting my own rod and reel seemed like a rite of passage and really connected me to fishing. Since we had started fishing with his little child combo and an adult reel neither seemed to work out just right. We got a cane pole to make it easier and Jordan did start to get some of his casting down but we hadn't made it to reeling yet.

So a few weeks ago I was in a sporting goods store and found a Zebco SLDLM Micro Spincast combo that was pretty inexpensive. The 4'6" rod with a short handle and a low profile ultralight reel looked like a good option for my little friend. We have been fishing a few times and he looks forward to it, and every time he gets a little better. Within a few trips Jordan has gotten to where he can reel a fish in by himself and cast with some help. Though his Mom and Dad would say that the bayou blood has him doing so good, I think the right rod and reel has helped too.

Though I have had sponsors during my fishing career, I have no connection with Zebco. I just found a product that is a good match for a small child that helps to make fishing easy and fun. Maybe it's the rod and reel, maybe it's the bayou blood.
