A Gray Night Part 2

Someone was knocking at the door. The sound of the knocking woke Caleb from a deep sleep. He looked over at the clock and it said 5:15 a.m. Who would be here this early Caleb wondered? He stumbled through his tiny apartment getting to the door. He opened the door and his best friend Jessie stumbled through reeking of whiskey. "Man what are you doing here this early in the morning?" he asked. "Dude Marie kicked me out and I need somewhere to crash till she calms down and I sober up. Can I crash here for a few hours?" "Sure Jessie you know you are welcome. But you need to quit fighting with her so much before you lose her." "She just doesn't understand I like to hang with my friends. She got all upset because after you closed the bar I went to Randy's house and partied some more. She needs to loosen up. I like to party."

"Jessie I understand that, but man you are not single anymore. You married her and just because the vows say for better or for worse doesn't mean she will stand by and put up with more of the worst than the better." "I know. I know I need to get my shit straight before I lose her but I just can't seem to get my act together. I love her so much. She means the world to me and I am going to try my best to be the kind of man she will be proud of, but enough about me and my problems. Who was that sexy little brunette you were talking to?"

"Be more specific would you, I own the bar and I talk to practically everyone that comes in." "Don't play dumb with me you know exactly who I mean. The one you were speaking to after your set was over and you sure looked as enamored with her as she appeared with you. The both of you even appeared to forget the friend who was with her."

"Oh Sue, well I met her before, almost a year ago. Remember me telling you about the woman with the baby who came into the bar and her husband had beaten her up and abused the baby?" "Oh Yes I remember that. You were so upset if that guy would have walked into the bar I believe you would have killed him or least put him in the hospital. So that is the woman you swooped in and played the Knight in shining armor for. Nice choice of a hot lady to protect."

"Jessie you may be my closest friend but that is the stupidest comment I have ever heard you say. For one all I did was take her to the police station. Secondly it would not have mattered what the woman looked like, I would have done the same thing for anyone who was in danger. It had nothing to do with what she looked like except that she looked badly beaten by a worthless piece of shit."

"Ok Caleb, I am sorry I did not mean to upset you dude or insinuate you would not have helped a woman if she was not hot. I just need to get some sleep before I stick my foot further into my mouth."

Caleb got Jessie some blankets and a pillow and went to take a shower. He had to admit at least to himself that Jessie was right about one thing. Sue Connelly was indeed hot. Caleb wondered if he would ever see Sue again. She was an intriguing and beautiful woman. He was impressed with the fact that she stood up to her husband and made sure he paid for what he did to her and her daughter. That was something that Caleb knew took a strong and independent woman to be able to do.

Caleb had seen many men abuse the women they were supposed to love. Because of owning a bar and grill he saw many types of people come in. It disheartened him so much to see these women get up and leave with the men who had verbally and/or physically just abused them. It took a very strong person to be able to stand up to a man capable of doing this and Sue Connelly was one of them. Caleb remembered she had told him she worked at Beulah's Bed and Breakfast. Wasn't it lucky for Caleb that Beulah was his Mother's best friend and Caleb had promised her a few weeks ago to come over and do so some repairs for her around the place? It was time for him to keep his promise and just maybe he would get to see Sue again. Caleb finished getting dressed and got in his car to head to Beulah's.

What lays ahead for Caleb? Will he see Sue Connelly? Be watching for the rest of the story. Go here to read Part 1.
