A Great Democratic Senator and Icon, Sen. Edward Kennedy Dies at Age 77

Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy, a Veteran, born1932 - dies at age 77 at his home in Hyannis Port Cape Cod. He was the last of the Kennedy brothers and the only one of the brothers who died a natural death and was able to say goodbye to his family members and friends.

All three of his brothers died a tragic death. President John Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. Robert Kennedy, who was running for president, was shot to death in 1968 moments after claiming victory in California.

Senator Edward Kennedy was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in May of 2008. He lost his battle with cancer August 25, 2009. He was the greatest US Democratic Senator and Icon and some say the back bone of the Kennedy family.

Senator Edward Kennedy served 46 years in the US Senate and wrote over 2,500 bills. He overhauled immigration laws and allowed 18 year olds to vote.

He ran against President Jimmy Carter for Democratic Nomination in 1980 and lost.

Senator Kennedy campaigned for civil rights and HealthCare. The first black president candidate, now President Obama, received Senator Kennedy's endorsement in 2008.

Funeral services will be held for Senator Kennedy on August 29, 2009 at a Historic Boston Church. President Obama will speak at the funeral Mass.

Senator Edward Kennedy will be buried at the Arlington Cemetery near his two slain brothers, President John Kennedy and Senator Robert Kennedy.
