In two months, my plan is to head out the door and purchase an iPad 2 with some extra gadgets to make it complete. Because I write a lot, a keyboard will need to be added onto the tablet. The iPad 2 will require a carrying case for protection. I am sure that I will find a few more additions to make the purchase more satisfying and complete. The anticipated bill after a few applications are downloaded should be around $1,000. This amount will require a bit of saving to be done so that none of the purchases will need to be added to my personal debt.
The savings will start with a few minor budget cuts.
My plan is to save about $25 per week by eliminating some of my eating out habits. Since it costs about a quarter as much to eat home as to eat out, I should be able to reach this savings by eating at home two or three extra times per week. Switching to tap water from carbonated drinks will bring my weekly savings up another $10 or so. If I can manage to reduce my driving consolidating trips to the store, it should be possible to reach $50 per week with just these minor adjustments.
I will need to increase my income a little.
By adding on an extra article per day for five days per week in my online writing, I can expect to gain about $20 more per week in revenue. Along with this, I have lined up a tutoring job that is going to make me about $50 per week after taxes. When this is combined with the savings netted from budget cuts,my savings will be at $120 per week. Even by making this a conservative estimate, I should be able to save up $400 per month without too much pain.
Since this will leave me possibly $200 short, I will need to use one final effort to reach my goal.
I store coins. It would be good if I could say I was a collector, but it simply is not true. I like to look at old coins, new coins, and specialty coins. So, I keep them in pouches, cans, and other storage containers. Realistically, these coins are not going to appreciate a great deal over the next couple of decades. This will be a good reason to move some of them to a new home. By selling off part of my stored coins, I can easily net the final $200 or so that is needed to make my purchase. Frankly, I can already feel the tablet in my hands and anticipate finding it a great addition to my writer's toolkit.
