A Great Writing Duo, Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child
Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child Action Adventure Techno-writers
The two men met in the 1980's when Child was an editor for St. Martin's Press in New York City. Douglas worked for the American Museum of Natural History and wrote a historical columns for their magazine. Child wanted someone to give him a history of the Museum, so he offered to take Douglas to lunch. That was the beginning of their association. Douglas had always wanted to write a book and "Dinosaurs in the Attic" a non-fiction book was his first. Child edited the book for him. After that they became friends and they decided to write a techno-thriller together in 1995 called "Relic" which was later made into a film.
By himself Preston has written and published five non-fiction books and many novels that have become best sellers. He writes a regular column on Archeology for The New Yorker Magazine plus has written for such publications as Nation Geographic, Harper's and the Smithsonian magazines. He was recently featured on Dateline for a story he did on "The Monster of Florence" in Italy.
Preston graduated cum laude with a degree in English at Pomona College. He left the museum to write full time and moved to New Mexico where he lived for about 20 years and did research on the Coronado's search for the legendary Seven Cities of Gold. He rode horseback across a thousand miles following Coronado's steps and after that he wrote the book "Cities of Gold". However he now resides in the state of Maine with his wife and three kids and returned to his New England root. His newest book due out sometime in 2008 is named "Blasphemy."
Lincoln Child, his frequent collaborator, says the two of them get along like husband and wife and sometimes argue over what they write, but it is always resolved and they have stayed friends. While Child prefers to work on high-tech stories and horror stories, Preston prefers adventure stories but together they often combine their interests. He says that when he and Preston are working on a book together they telephone often or fax each other with ideas and corrections. There latest book together, which is to be forthcoming in 2008, is called "Revenant".
Child started writing short stories in 2nd grade, but hasn't written one since he left high school. However he said he has a great idea for one, but hasn't done it because he has been so busy writing novels. However, one day he wants to publish a ghost and horror anthology in which he may put one of his short stories. Child graduated from college in Northfield, Minnesota from Carleton College with a major in English. Almost as soon as he left college he went to work for St Martin's Press. Although he was a full editor he chose to leave and go to work for Met Life as a systems analyst for a while. Then after "Relic's" publication he decided to go into full time writing as a career.
Child love almost any kind of music and plays the piano and 5-string banjo plus Midi instruments. He also love motorcycles, exotic parrots, bow ties. Italian suits and pre 1950 literature and poetry.
He, his wife and daughter now reside in Morristown, New Jersey but he goes home to his place of birth in Westport, Connecticut, almost every weekend. His latest that he wrote solo was "Deep Storm" that came out this year.

Post a CommentWell done ~ Great work!
I'll have to check these out.
The amazing thing is that each of these authors write different types of books. Douglas does true stories and Lincoln does horror and tecno stuff. How they ever got the nerve to join forces is beyond belief and fascinating that it really works. I love their work separately or together and have read almost everything they have written.
I'm a fan of Lincoln and Preston. I especially enjoyed their monster hunt book, Relic.
