A Guide to ABC's 2007 Fall New Comedy Line Up

Jennifer Habersham
It's the middle of September and that means the return of your favorite television show and a slew of new shows will soon be available for your viewing pleasure. Here's a quick look at the debut situational comedies that ABC has to offer for the 2007-2008 FALL season.

Cavemen follows three cavemen trying to live a normal life while living in Atlanta no less. I'm not sure exactly who thought that this would be a good idea. I can see the pitch now "You know how popular those Gieco commercials are". Whoever though that taking a 30 second television spot and turning it into to a 22 minute situation comedy will probably be out of a job within a few weeks of the Cavemen debut. Cavemen will face the same problems that plague the Saturday Night Live films. How do you take a five minute sketch that was only funny for the first 30 seconds and turn it into a full length feature and have people enjoy it? The truth of the matter is you can't.

Samantha Who tells the story of Samantha Newly (played by Christina Applegate) a vain, self absorbed woman who after a hit and run accident finds herself with a bit of amnesia. Of course the type of amnesia Sam has means that she can still function and have a normal life but she has no personal memories. Through talking with family and friends (or people she thinks are her friends) Sam will learn that she is an alcoholic, has almost no relationship with her parents, is having an affair with a married man, and that she is an all around "bad" person. Of course Sam will do what she can to become a better person with her old habits constantly rearing their ugly head.

Carpoolers follows the story of four men with very different and very distinct personalities as they travel to and from work together in, of course, the carpool lane. Not much information has been released about Carpoolers but I assume that some of the action will take place outside of the vehicle. The commercials for Carpoolers seem amusing enough but not in a tune in every week sort of amusing. More like a watch it one time and wonder what shows ABC turned down to pick up this crap sort of amusing.

Miss Guided (which will not debut till midseason) follows the story of Becky Freeley who takes a job as a guidance counselor in her old high school. Of course Becky as a high schooler was the quintessential nerd and underachiever, but grown up Becky is fabulous and has her act together. That is until she runs into the new English teacher who Becky recognizes as her old high school nemeses the beautiful cheerleader Lisa. Of course hilarity will ensue and Lisa and Becky will soon find themselves vying for the attention of the same man. Miss Guided employs the familiar story formula of geek turned hottie who gets revenge on the one girl that made her life a living hell in high school. I think I've seen this before.
