A Guide to Atlanta Area Martin Luther King Day Parades and Events

January 15th 2011 would have been Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s 82nd birthday. And although some in the Atlanta area will spend the day by just relaxing at home, many others will take the time to participate in one of the many events being held that weekend in MLK's honor. The King Center , the organization dedicated to preserving the memory and history of MLK lists the following as only some of the events to be held for the celebration.

On Saturday, January 15th The King Center (449 Auburn Avenue, Atlanta Ga. 30312 ) will hold from 9am until 1pm in their Freedom Hall "Happy Birthday Dr. King". This program which is free and open to the public is a learning opportunity / Birthday Party for Dr. King geared towards children ages 2 thru 10 years old. For more information you may contact Barbara Harrison at (404)526-8911 or email programs@thekingcenter.org .

On Sunday, the 16th in the King Center Auditorium there will be a Book Signing with remaining members of The King Family from 3:00pm - 5:00pm. This event is also free and open to the public.

On Monday the 17th at 10am the Annual MLK Commemorative Service will be held at historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, which is located across the street from the King Center (407 Auburn Ave, Atlanta Ga. 30312). The Keynote speaker at this event will be Martin Luther King III , President & CEO of The King Center. Again, there is no charge for this event but seating is limited and a large turnout is expected, so come early if you want a seat inside. If you don't make it inside though, a large JumboTron screen will be positioned in front of The King Center's Rose Garden and will broadcast the service live outside.

Also beginning at 10am on Monday will be the Annual MLK Parade/March and Rally hosted by ' Hands on Atlanta' . The march begins on Peachtree Street at Baker and ends at the King Center National Park on Auburn Avenue. Other activities are scheduled to take place at the King Center at the end of the Parade/March (outdoors).

Immediately following the Parade/March, participants are asked to get involved and volunteer for dozens of service projects at sites that have significance to Atlanta's civil rights movement. For more information you may contact "Hands on Atlanta" at 404-979-2800 or www.handsonatlanta.org .

Again, these are only some of the events being held in honor of Dr. King that weekend, both by The King Center and by other churches or organizations. As you can see, most if not all will be free of charge, so there is nothing that should keep you from having a great active weekend while at the same time participating in history. Happy King Day!

For a great book on King and the civil rights movement -- with a terrific analysis of the "I Have a Dream" speech -- get Charles Euchner's "Nobody Turn Me Around: A People's History of the 1963 March on Washington" (Beacon Press, 2010).
