Ÿ Arch Support--On the inside of the midsole, a raised portion supports the foot's natural arch. Arch support prevents tendons from being damaged as you run.
Ÿ Heel Cup--A heel cup is placed in the back of the shoe where the heel sits inside. The heel cup's sole purpose is to keep the heel from shifting within the shoe.
Ÿ Midsole--The midsole is found on the inside of the shoe under the interior lining. The midsole provides cushioning to prevent damage to the foot. It also adds stability to the shoe's overall form. Often filled with cushioning gel or air, the midsole works with the outsole to take the brunt of the impact as the foot hits pavement.
Ÿ Outsole--The outsole is the layer on the underside of the shoe. This layer adds traction and grip. It also serves to first cushion the step by creating a percentage of spring as each tread meets the ground.
Ÿ Upper--The upper is the portion of the shoe that comes up and over the foot eventually coming to the laces that secure the shoe to the foot. The upper includes the shoe's side, toe area, tongue, and lacing area. Where the heel meets the back of the shoe, a layer of thick padding is often placed to prevent rubbing and blisters.
Every pair of running shoes is different and will feel better on one runner over another. Your weight, running capacity, terrain, and weather conditions can affect the type of shoe that works best for you. When trying on running shoes, wait until the end of the day when your feet tend to be slightly swollen. Also, make sure you are wearing the same sock you would wear for running because every sock has different thickness.
Adidas AdiStar cost more at $120, but they are perfect for runners with low arches. The shoe's form allows it to spring better than other shoes. Reinforced sides also prevent side slippage with the foot.
The $165 Asics Gel are great shoes for the casual runner who needs a spongy interior. This shoe is suitable for those who concern themselves more with a paced run versus distance or speed.
At $90 per pair, Brooks Adrenaline sneakers receive high praise from runners. The midsole is filled with gel creating a soft cushioning factor. This shoe is best for runners who need superior shock protection.
Etonic's Jepara costs $90 on average. The shoe contains strong reinforcements making it the perfect shoe for a runner whose step hits the ground hard.
Mizuno's Wave Elixir is the best shoe for distance runners. The sneaker is lightweight and covered in a mesh material that allows the foot to breathe. Inside a plastic coating adds durability. Because there is the plastic component, you should be prepared to break the shoes in. At $85, the shoe is affordable.
Heavier runners need to purchase the $95 UK Gear PT-03. This show contains strong support in all aspects of the shoe. Extra cushioning is provided to ensure that heftier runners gain cushioning to protect their feet and ankles.
Having the right running shoes will prevent injury and make your workout more comfortable. Your best bet is to buy the sneakers at retailers, such as JcPenney or Sears because they will most likely have the lowest prices.
