A Guide to Celebrating New Year's Eve in Trafalgar Square in London

Denise Larkin
Trafalgar Square is a spot where many people visit on New Year's Eve each year. It is one of the best places to see the New Year in. Every year visitors to Trafalgar Square revel in listening to the sound of Big Ben's chimes when the clock strikes midnight.

Thousands of people enjoy the night of fun at this square, but be warned that Trafalgar Square is very crowded on New Year's Eve with people ready to celebrate the New Year when Big Ben's chimes go off. There are lots of police guarding the area in case of any violence or fighting, but it is usually safe to be there.

To start the night off, there is music from BBC radio one that is loud enough to hear to entertain everybody at Trafalgar Square and around the London area. The music starts at around 10.00 pm and the countdown to midnight commences at 11.55 pm. After that the firework display will commence and then BBC radio one will air again for 30 minutes more after the traditional sing song of Auld Laing Syne is sang by the crowd.

You can stand by the tall Christmas tree with friends or family and enjoy the night. Some jump into the fountain and make complete fools of themselves. Whatever goes on at Trafalgar Square is fun to watch and the atmosphere is great there.

After Big Ben's chimes, an extravagant firework display in London will commence setting the sky alight. The firework display can be seen clearly on the huge screens at Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square.

This event at Trafalgar Square is free. The huge screens, put up especially for New Year's Eve, highlight the firework event for visitors at the square and the same for Parliament Square. Alcohol will also be allowed at Trafalgar Square, but drinking must be done responsibly. Only alcohol in plastic bottles and cans will be allowed. No glass bottles will be permitted in the area!

There are plenty of public toilets all around the London area and in Trafalgar Square.

Public Transport on New Year's Eve in London

The public transport system, such as, the London underground, London buses, Dockland's light railway and tram link will operate all night until 4.30 am on New Year's Eve in London. This service will be free for everyone from midnight to 4.30am. So getting to London and home again will be easy.

So, where ever you are in London on New Year's Eve you will get to see the firework display and hear Big Ben's chimes at midnight, but hanging out at Trafalgar Square later in the evening is a unique experience. Anyone will enjoy it and it is unforgettable than going to just a night club!
