Location
Central Michigan University is located in Mount Pleasant, county of Isabella. It is an ideal place for Flint, Saginaw, Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor, Kalamazoo, Big Rapids, Battle Creek, Lansing, and Metro Detroit suburbs. CMU also has many off-site campuses in California, Ohio, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, North Carolina, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Virginia.
Admission
It is recommended that you apply as early as you can because CMU has the fourth largest enrollment in Michigan. They received about 3,700 applications from freshmen alone, and they closed when those spots are filled. The deadline for application is December 1st.
CMU accepts freshmen, transfer, graduate, and international students. Each group has different requirements. Make sure you check out CMU website to learn more about the process of admission.
Hot Degrees and Signature Programs
Along with 150 academic programs, CMU also offer Hot Degrees in Apparel Design, Political Science, Meteorology, and Geology. The Signature Programs include Broadcast and Cinematic Arts, Health, Engineering, Teaching, Music, Business, Psychology and Neuroscience. Of course, we can not forget the Honors Program, which was founded in 1961. Students enjoy a smaller class and have more contact with the faculties.
Financial
Eight out of ten freshmen receive financial aid, and numerous students receive scholarship for full tuition, room and board for four years. CMU is the only university that guaranteed tuition won't increase once you start classes. The first two years in residence halls also offer a guaranteed rate.
The deadline for FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) should be postmark by February 14th if sending by snail mail, and March 1st if submit it online. Check scholarship website for other deadlines information.
Residence Halls
There are many buildings on the campus of CMU for students to choose from. Many of these halls have the latest work-out equipment, convenient stores, and courts for volleyball and basketball right outside the building.
All residence halls include: cable and high speed internet, study rooms, television lounges, computer labs, laundry facilities, a Student Success Center with academic advisors, and counselors in residence.
There are many places on campus where you can eat and drink. They are the Muncherie in Robinson Hall, and the food court with: Grille Works, Bene Great Pasta, Java City, Express, Sushi, Salad Garden, Montague's Deli, Kettle Classics, Wraps, Drinks, Tmmy.Ymmy, and Bene Pizzeria.
Things to do
CMU's setting is a park-like campus that offers a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. All classes are about 10-minute walk. Mount Pleasant is a safe and relaxing town, where you can enjoy nature or discover cool places around campus. Here are things to consider:
- Outdoor concerts, carnival rides, and free food at the beginning of the school year.
- Friday night football game.
- Chippewa River tubing or canoeing.
- Celebrate the end of semester in December with a pair of ice skates, skiing, or watch the sky full of stars.
- There are seven public parks in Mount Pleasant to be discovered.
- Ziibiwing Center is opened to the public for educational experiences.
Along with libraries, movie theatre, antiques, shopping, restaurants, farmer markets, art galleries, and museum, there is also the famous Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort. Mount Pleasant is home of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe.
Many Metro Detroit high school students choose Central Michigan University for the balance of city and country living. For parents, the choice is obvious since CMU has a guaranteed tuition for four years and no increase rate for the first two years of residence halls. If you decide to go to CMU, fill out your application early, before December 1st, and fill out your FAFSA before February 14th if using regular mail, and March 1st if submit it online.
