A Guide to Choosing Devilish Movies for Halloween

Charlotte Kuchinsky

Halloween is all about getting completely spooked and scared. That makes it the perfect time for some of Hollywood's scariest films. That's especially true of those that claim "the devil made me do it."

When it comes down to it, what's more frightening than the devil himself? Not much! Here are some picks for the most deliciously devilish movies to watch this spooky season.

'Constantine' stars Keanu Reeves and Rachel Weisz. John Constantine tries to save his damned soul by fighting and dispatching demons from the world. Angela Dodson (Weisz) is a cop who needs his help after her devout Catholic twin is accused of suicide. Together, she and John take on the devil for her sister's soul. Will they win?

'The Devil's Advocate' puts Keanu Reeves's Kevin Lomax in the saddle with Satan (Al Pacino) once again. Kevin is a small town lawyer who never loses a case. He catches the eye of a big city law firm led by John Milton (Pacino). When he and wife Mary Ann (Charlize Theron) move to New York, it set in motion all kinds of problems for Kevin's family. That includes driving Mary Ann crazy. Can Kevin win the right to his own soul and win back Mary Ann's as well?

'End of Days' features a young Robin Tunney as Christine York. The girl is in the center of a prophecy about earth's last moments. Christine's sought by a devil-possessed Gabriel Byrne who wants to impregnate her with his child. But a cop named Jericho (Arnold Schwarzenegger) plans to stop him. Can he succeed and save the world as well as himself?

'The Exorcism of Emily Rose' pins a college coed (Jennifer Carpenter) against the king of hell and his minions with only a priest (Tom Wilkinson) to help her. When Emily dies the priest is accused of murdering her and Laura Linney's Erin Bruner must defend him. There's only one problem. She doesn't believe him. Can she win without faith?

Clive Barker's 'Hellraiser' and its many sequels have scared the pants off Halloween viewers for decades. Blood, guts, sadomasochism and sex make this devilish picture not for the faint of heart. I prefer not going there but a lot of people think it provides the maximum devlish scare.

'Lost Souls' pits Winona Ryder against Ben Chaplin who is about to become possessed by the devil. At first her goal is to prove who he is. Then it becomes a mission to kill him before its too late. In the end she tries to save him. Can she succeed?

'The Omen', stars Gregory Peck as Ambassador to Britain, Robert Thorne, and Lee Remick as his wife Katherine. Through a series of odd but pre-planned occurrences, the couple becomes the adoptive parents for the devil's demon seed. The film and its three sequels cover the birth, rise and defeat of the Anti-Christ; played by Sam Neill. Does the devil win or lose?

'Paranormal Activity' was a little film that proved it had big drawing power. It has spawned two equally popular sequels. In the original, however, heroine, Katie (Katie Featherstone) moves in with her boyfriend Micha (Micha Sloat). Life is good until an old family demon comes back to destroy Katie's life. Will he do it?

'Rosemary's Baby' deals with the birth of the Anti-Christ out of innocent young Rosemary Woodhouse (Mia Farrow). She must come to terms with her husband's (John Cassavetes) betrayal and then battle a witch's coven led by Ruth Gordon and Sidney Blackmer to save the soul of her unborn child. Can she or is it already too late?

'Servants of Twilight' offers another version of the Anti-Christ (Jarret Lennon) as an innocent looking child protected by his mother (Belinda Bauer) and a private detective Charlie Harmon (Bruce Greenwood). Together they battle a group of religious fanatics who want to kill the boy. But should they be joining them instead?

My favorite films are those that show good triumphing over evil. Sadly, not all of these movies have that outcome. However, most of them do or at least challenge the way a person thinks about God and the devil.

Great list. I also loved "Case 39" a real creepy one with a super ending. Where's the tried and true horror film, "The Exorcist." I guess that one's already a Halloween classic and you wanted to bring some new ones to the foreground. Good list, I enjoyed your review of them.

Great picks - I'd add one more - off the top of my head. 'Prophecy' is an amazing little film with a stellar cast, including Christopher Walken, Eric Stolz and Virginia Madsen. It deals with angels, God's "favoritism" with the races he created and the devil himself - played by Viggo Mortensen in a great early role. It's scary, cool and intellectual all in one. Sadly, it's mostly overlooked, yet it has spawned a few sequels. Highly recommended if you like 'devilish' movies!
