As any craft enthusiast will tell you, the stores that you buy your craft supplies from can make or break your experience. "Big box" type stores tend to have the best selection but the personality and special-ness is removed. They can offer relatively good deals, but you are never going to find a truly exceptional deal because everything is regulated. The smaller stores have a much more inviting atmosphere, and chances are you are going to meet people with the same interests as you, but the selection can be pricey and limited. In the Pasadena, California area there are a healthy mix of big retail stores and the smaller boutiques. Here are 4 stores that I found to be really useful for a variety of crafts.

A stitch in time

This large and spacious store is a great place for needlework enthusiasts. Their yarn selection is better suited for any beginner knitters, but experienced hobbyists can enjoy the experience as well. The tables they have set up can be a wonderful haven for someone needing a space to work on a project.

Jo-Ann

This quintessential retail craft store beat out its slightly larger competitor, Michaels, simply because their prices are better. The selection is fairly rudimentary, and finding their clearance selection is akin to sighting the Loch Ness monster. At the same time, if you need the basics, this is a great shop for it.

Zinnia

This store exemplifies the idea of unique boutique stores that operate off the beaten path. This store has every conceivable knick-knack that you can imagine. It's zany and irreverent, quirky and colorful. For the crafter with more one-of-a-kind tastes, their selection is more diverse and interesting than at other stores. It's a store that you could get lost in for a day.

San Gabriel Bead Company

This great little store has an incredibly ample selection to fit all your beading needs. The staff is ready and willing to answer any questions you might have, no matter how small. The store can be a little more pricey compared to other options, but if price isn't a concern, going to a specialty store for the beads can be a really fun experience.
