A Guide to Curing Infected Belly Button Piercings: A Story of 2 Infections

Danielle L
I fell into the trend of having to have my belly button pierced. I wanted to show it off in the summer and mostly I wanted to do it because my parents didn't want me to. I have fought two belly button piercing infections; here is how I did it.

The first time I got my belly button pierced it was a gift from an ex-boyfriend, and he picked the place. I was nervous as can be. So I got it don,e and there was no bleeding, but it hurt really badly. A few days later there was a greenish oozing coming from the piercing. They guy then sold me this H2O salt solution spay and told me to use it only once a day. It still didn't help so I started using it twice a day. That still didn't work it just stopped it from getting worse.

At this point I started asking around to some of my friends and one said to spray Bactine on it and wash it twice a day with the anti bacterial soap instead of once a day. I did this and it seem to make it better but didn't cure it. A few other people also suggested Neosporin and an anti bacteria cream both of which I never tried.

So when I could cure the piercing I went to a different piercing parlor to ask about it. They said it wasn't pierced straight and that it was probably snagged on cloths and that it probably wouldn't heal. Mind you this was 9 months after I had it pierced and it should have been healed by then. The guy suggested taking the piercing out and then re piercing it a year later.

So after a year I go and get my belly button re pierced. This time there was bleeding because she had to go through some scar tissue. This time when it started to get infected I sprayed Bactine on it twice a day, washed it twice a day and soaked it in warm water twice a day. Within a week the infection was gone and this also helped heal my piercing 2 months faster!

I was also told not to use my towel to dry the piercing because towels harbor bacteria that can cause infection; I was told to use a paper towel or napkin. And to this day I still wash the piercing once a day with the anti bacterial soap, just in case!

this was very good information. A friend of mine had hers done several times after having her 3 kids. has done the washing, bactine and warm water every time. I am very prone to infection as I am a carrier of MRSA so when I go mine done 9 months ago I kept my piercing clean with soap and bactine and it healed with no infection. when i left my ring out a couple days ago and put my ring back in it go puffy and red like my infections usually get so i started using bactine and its all good now.

hey my piercing isnt straight either and it sucks, but i only got it done 4 days ago , my friend suggested to just put it a dangly one but i still hate the way its nto straight is there anything else i could do?

HAHA could have been staed nicer but the funny thing is the sea salt you are 'supposed' to use made my infection worse and costed $20! RIP OFF!! i went to a different place and they were the ones that told me to use the bactine to get rid of the infectionbefore it got worse. EVERY time i have gotten anything pierced they tell you to use anti bacterial soap so idk where you get that one from. And the bactine worked fine i am currently 7 month preggo and had taken my belly ring out hole still open, stretched out, but open!

Haha yeah great BAD advice. That's everything you're NOT supposed to do. Anti-bacterial soap dries it and takes the good bacteria away as well. Bactine is even worse. You're not supposed to put all that crap on there. A simple sea salt soak twice a day works magic.

What makes me qualified to say this? I've studied the matter - IN PIERCING SCHOOL.
