A Guide to Downtown San Diego

Maria Palma
San Diego, otherwise known as "America's Finest City", is one of the destinations for a relaxing vacation or weekend getaway. It's a vibrant, growing metropolitan city that has a small-town feel. The city has so much to offer including various theme parks and dozens of shopping areas, however if you really want to experience San Diego, then I recommend staying downtown. Downtown San Diego has something to offer for everyone!

Gaslamp Quarter
First stop is the Gaslamp Quarter which is the historic heart of downtown San Diego. The Gaslamp Quarter is comprised of several blocks of hotels, restaurants, eateries, shops, and an overall laid back atmosphere.
Just about every type of international cuisine can be found in the Gaslamp.

Fourth and Fifth Avenues have become a popular hang out in the Gaslamp where people can dine, meet for coffee, or find treasures in some of the unique shopping boutiques. Whether you're hanging out at the two-story Starbucks, having a meal at Croce's, or buying a new pair of shoes in the Puma store, you're sure to have a good time.

Horton Plaza
If you really like to shop, you'll want to check out Horton Plaza, the seven level shopping mall which houses department stores like Macy's and Nordstrom. The architecture of the mall is maze-like and quite interesting. Horton Plaza also has a movie theater if you want to catch the latest.

Seaport Village
Another great place to shop and see some pretty views is Seaport Village. Seaport Village is situated right in the middle of The Marriott and The Hilton and is a landmark for waterfront shopping and dining. You'll find 54 one-of-a-kind shops if you want a souvenir or two and if you get a little hungry there's four restaurants that have panoramic views of San Diego Bay.

Petco Park
During baseball season downtown gets pretty crowded as the new baseball stadium, Petco Park, is right in the heart of downtown. If you do catch a game in this stadium that holds 42,000 seats, you'll also catch breathtaking views of San Diego and the ocean.

Museums
Downtown San Diego has many museums including the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Maritime Museum of San Diego where you can go on board the famous Star of India, and the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum, just to name a few. Just a ten minute drive away from the Gaslamp Quarter, you'll discover Balboa Park which is home to various art venues, 15 major museums, beautiful gardens, and the famous San Diego Zoo.

Night Life
Downtown San Diego has a very active night life. Many of the restaurants stay open late and you'll find many bars and clubs hosting all types of events and music. Whatever type of music you're into, you'll find a place to let loose and have a good time. Sometimes you'll even find street entertainers for those of you who don't want to dish out $10-$20 to get into a bar or club!

Transportation Tips
The best way to explore downtown is by foot, taxi, or public transportation. If you do drive into downtown expect to either pay for parking on the street or in one of many parking lots and parking garages. The San Diego trolley also runs through downtown if you do decide to venture out of downtown. You'll also find pedi-cabs riding around the Gaslamp. However, if you're in a romantic mood, you can also catch a ride on a horse-drawn carriage that will take you to some parts of downtown.

As you can see, there's much to do in and around downtown San Diego. The key to having fun is to simply relax and let the magic of the city surround you!

  • There's something for everyone to see in downtown San Diego
In 1850 William Heath Davis wanted to establish a town on San Diego's waterfront, but failed after an economic depression. It wasn't until 1869 when Alonzo Horton took over that San Diego started to boom.

I’ve been visiting the San Diego since I was 20 after I came over from ASU on weekend trips from college. The city of San Diego is amazing so I started a touring company over 30 years later called http://www.sandiegourbanadventures.com

We provide hiking tours, walking tours and like the name of the company says urbanadventures.. Check us out and let me know you saw my post on associated content and I’ll offer you a discount.
