Various, GA 30533
I wouldn't call myself a connoisseur by any stretch, but I do enjoy a nice occasional glass of wine and love to wine taste. Since moving from Northern California, the Bay Area, I really felt that I was at a wine disadvantage here in Georgia. Georgia law prevents alcohol/wine shipments for personal consumption, so I couldn't even order my favorites from Napa or Sonoma valleys. However, more recently, I decided to do a little researching and found that Georgia, yes Georgia, has its own "wine country" of sorts and has several wineries. Here's a complete list of what I've found on my wine quest here in Georgia:
Habersham Winery
7025 S. Main Street
(Ga Hwy 75)
Helen, GA 30545

Habersham Vineyards and Winery has been producing award winning Georgia wines since 1983 and is one of Georgia's oldest and largest wineries. It's located ½ mile south of Alpine Helen in Nacoochee Village.
To its credit, Habersham Vineyards & Winery has been awarded over 150 medals since 1983, in both national and international competitions.
Habersham includes the two vineyards, Mossy Creek and Stonepile. Mossy Creek is an eight acre vinifera vineyard acquired in 1994. It is planted with cabernet sauvignon, merlot and chardonnay and yields about 25 tons of grapes annually. Stonepile Vineyard is located north of Clarkesville, and is Habersham's original and oldest vineyard with plantings dating to 1980. Current plantings of about 30 acres yield 125 tons yearly on average. Varieties include cabernet sauvignon, merlot, chardonnay, riesling and French-American varieties seyval, vidal and chambourcin.
The wines: Creekstone wines utilize their best grapes and oak barrels to produce their premium, vintage dated, varietal Creekstone wines. Habersham Estate wines are very popular and include varietal vinefera wines as well as blended wines using both vinefera and French-American grapes. Southern Harvest wines utilize the native muscadine grape as well as fruit flavors. These wines are nostalgic for many Southerners.
Habersham even offers complimentary wine tasting. While visiting the Winery, you can also watch the wine production process through viewing windows. There is even a Gift Shop with shelves of wine selections, specialty gift items from around the world and a large inventory of unique and gourmet foods, including imported cheeses. The Winery is open to the public from Monday-Saturday 10:00 am - 6:00 pm and Sunday 12:30 - 6:00 pm.

Besides the listing of local wineries, here are some interesting wine facts that I discovered on the Georgia Wine Country website:
ONE ACRE OF LAND (Averages):
Five tons of wine-grapes is 10,000 pounds.
13.51 barrels of wine at 7,552 oz./ea.
797 gallons of wine at 128 oz./ea.
3,958 bottles of wine at 25.6 oz./ea.
15,940 glasses of wine at 6.4 oz./ea.
ONE BARREL OF WINE CONTAINS:
740 pounds of grapes and 59 gallons.
24.6 cases of wine.
295 bottles of wine.
1,180 glasses of wine.
ONE CASE OF WINE CONTAINS:
30 pounds of grapes or 468 oz.
307.2 ounces of wine.
12 bottles of wine.
48 glasses of wine.
ONE STANDARD BOTTLE OF WINE CONTAINS:
750 ML of wine.
2.4 pounds of grapes or 39 oz.
25.6 ounces of wine or 4/5 quart.
4 glasses of wine.
Again, I found that we don't have to travel all the way to the Napa or Sonoma Valley to find great wines. You can visit the Dahlonega Area Wine Brochure and Georgia Wine Country State Map to plan your visit. Happy wine hunting!
