A Guide for Great Christian Retreats

Casey L. Holley
Religious retreats and sabbaticals are ways for you to connect with God and truly focus on your spiritual body. Finding a tranquil place to stay during your retreat or sabbatical is essential to finding the connection you are searching for. There are several locations in the United States that offer interesting programs and features.

The Monastery of St. Gertrude

Located in Cottonwood, Idaho, the Monastery of St. Gertrude offers group and individual retreats and sabbaticals. You can also enjoy outreach retreats and online retreats for those times that you need solace and can't make it to Idaho. This monastery is run by Benedictine Sisters.

The Monastery of St. Gertrude also offers an Inn for visitors to the area that want a serene environment without participating in the retreat. Regular rooms and suites are available. Also located on the Monastery grounds is the Historical Museum at St. Gertrude that showcases the history of the region, a healing center and a spiritual center.

James L. Duncan Conference Center

The James L. Duncan Conference Center is located in Delray Beach, Florida. It is run by the Episcopal Church. This center offers two unique labyrinths on the grounds. Monthly labyrinth walks and an annual labyrinth retreat are the main events at this center. Located on the center grounds are a chapel, lodging accommodations and the meeting center.

The James L. Duncan Conference Center can accommodate up to 200 people per group. You can choose to do an individual retreat here or a group retreat. Prices are reasonable for either option as this is a non-profit conference center.

Gull Lake Ministries

Gull Lake Ministries is a non-denominational retreat center located in Hickory Corners, Michigan. This ministry center offers a rock climbing wall, basketball court, beach access, boat docks and fellowship centers. Various types of accommodations are available, including cottages, hotel room, dorm-like rooms and condominiums. Prices here depend on the type of retreat you are planning, the number of participants and the type of accommodations you need. Individual and group retreats are available.

Conclusion

Spiritual retreats vary greatly depending on the exact needs of the individual or group. Older adults may enjoy a peaceful retreat where mediation and nature are the main focus. Youths are likely to enjoy a combination of mediation time and sporting activities. Families may need a retreat that features a little of everything. Regardless of what you or your group needs, one of these three retreat locations is likely to fit the bill.
