A Guide to Haunted Cemeteries in Kentucky

Haunted cemeteries exist in all fifty states, but there are some interesting stories attached to the ones in Kentucky such as the Warfield Cemetery in Barbourville, Kentucky. According to local legend this cemetery is haunted by the ghost of something dark and sinister. People visiting the cemetery sometimes feel as if someone is following them and get an uneasy feeling while others claim to hear someone walking behind them. The sounds of the footsteps and the feeling disappears when they get outside the cemetery.

A hairy creature haunts the German Cemetery in Paducah, but he's joined by the ghost of an angry young woman and an odd orb. The Oak Grove Cemetery in the same area is haunted by Della Barnes who either died when her doctor gave her the wrong medicine or was killed by her fiancée. There's also the ghost of an elderly woman who haunts the Old Town Cemetery in Paintsville and seems to watch over the site.

In Benton, Kentucky there's a spot known as the glowing tombstone. The local story says that a man wandered off one night to look for cultists who were practicing in a barn near their home. The wife went looking for him and found him dead inside. Now his tombstone glows at night, letting others know that his vengeful spirit is still waiting for the men who killed him years ago.

There are also stories surrounding the Combs Cemetery in Jackson, including people seeing dark shadows and hearing strange noises at night. The ghost of a slave haunts the Hawkins Cemetery in Lake Barkley and Lebanon's St. Ivo's Cemetery is plagued by an odd fog. People also hear noises and what sounds like people talking inside the cemetery.

Madisonville, Kentucky is home to the haunted Grapevine Cemetery. An angel statue in the cemetery cries red blood, though the same story appears in cemeteries across the country. Another story claims the ghost of a teenage boy will scream when he hears love songs because he killed himself after his girlfriend left him. There are also stories told about the Baker Hollow Road Cemetery in Marion, including stories that the cemetery moves late at night. Others claim to hear odd things on the road leading to the cemetery and see dark shadows wandering through the area.

The same area has the witches grave in Pilot's Knobb where stories relate to a young girl burned at the stake for witchcraft (though Kentucky never did this). Supposedly the girl was buried in a special grave and can be seen late at night, poking her hands through the gate surrounding her grave and staring at passing visitors.

People also tell stories about the Salem Cemetery in Richmond such as those who claim to see eyes staring out of the cemetery at night. The cemetery on Owsley Road in Rineyville is rumored to be haunted by the ghost of a creature with bright eyes that follows people from the cemetery. A glowing orb or light is also seen by some in the Polksville Cemetery located in Salt Lick.

At the Marsh Fork Cemetery in Salyersville visitors report seeing a glowing headstone that's also seen from the road passing by. Another haunted cemetery is the Old Shepherdsville Cemetery where people see the ghosts of doctors walking through the area. The Burtonville Cemetery in Tollesboro is supposedly haunted by dark shadows and people also feel uneasy there.

Legends surround the cemetery on Big Pond Road in Maysville as well. People hear screams from inside and feel cold spots and some even encounter a ghostly woman in white who warns them to stay away. The legend surrounding the Maplewood Cemetery in Mayfield is less ghastly, but does claim that an angel will drop rocks on anyone who dares to sit under her at midnight.

Dawson Springs is home to several different haunted cemeteries including the Miners Cemetery, named for the mine that ran under the city. The mine collapsed and destroyed several homes and people who visit the cemetery at night sometimes see a weird fog and hear the sound of falling rocks. Another haunted cemetery is the Lick Creek Cemetery where people see weird things like glowing red eyes. There's also the McNeely Graveyard, haunted by the ghost of a baby.

Lewis County has at least two haunted graveyards. One is the Burtonville Cemetery where people see shadowy figures and feel someone watching them. The other is the East Fork Cemetery, haunted by footsteps that follow visitors around the cemetery late at night. A tomb in the back of the Lexington Cemetery in Lexington leaves visitors feeling uncomfortable or even mad, but the feeling disappears when they leave.

At the Jones Cemetery in Midland, Kentucky people report seeing dark figures that chase them through the cemetery late at night. The Skipworth Cemetery in Muhlenburg is haunted by the ghost of a soldier from the Civil War who still guards his final resting place. A dark shadow likes chasing people at Murray's Asbury Cemetery, but visitors also hear a crying baby inside. Murray is also home to the Coles Campground Cemetery where graves move, things move through the woods and people feel uneasy there at all times, even in the middle of the day.

Louisville, Kentucky also has a few haunted cemeteries like the Cherokee Cemetery where people hear a man screaming and see odd lights. There's also the Eastern Cemetery where the ghosts of those buried haunt the grounds because no one takes care of it anymore. There's also stories about the ghost of a woman haunting the back section of the cemetery where a group of children are buried. Louisville's Hebron Lane Cemetery is haunted by the ghost of a woman with a lantern who seems to look up at trees that were torn down. Locals claim the older woman lost her cat in the area years ago and still looks for him regularly.

Kentucky's Maple Grove Cemetery in Bloomfield is also haunted. Author Anna Beauchamp can sometimes be seen walking through the cemetery and on the passing road. At Diamond's Wynn Cemetery locals tell the story of two witches hung in the graveyard and then buried in graves above the ground. On the anniversary of their death people claim to see apparitions in the cemetery and feel the temperature drop.

The Gates of Hell cemetery in Elizabethtown is another haunted Kentucky site. Stories range from brightly colored orbs to shadowy figures walking around inside. There are also people who heard someone screaming inside the cemetery and having problems with the lights and radio in their car. The Campbell Cemetery in Forkedmouth has a haunted rock that drips blood. Legend claims that a man was murdered on the rock years ago.

The older cemetery is Hardburly is haunted by a strange fog that seems to settle around just one headstone. Stories also surround the cemetery in Hi Hat where people claim to feel something pushing them, even if they're sitting inside their car. People visiting the Riverside Cemetery in Hopkinsville, Kentucky claim to smell lilac perfume and hear people screaming or looking out the gate from inside the cemetery.

These haunted cemeteries are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to ghost stories from Kentucky.
