A Guide to Haunted High Schools in Kentucky

High school is hard enough without tossing a few ghosts into the mix, but that's exactly what faces some teenagers when they attend high school in Kentucky. This state has dozens of different haunted high schools, ranging from former suicides to accidental deaths.

The Owsley County High gym is also haunted. No one knows exactly who or what haunts the gym, but students have experienced something pushing them and seen glowing red eyes. There are also stories of students hearing voices in the gym and experiencing cold spots during the day.

There are also a number of stories told about the Meade County High School in Brandenburg. The gym at the high school was used to store dead bodies following a tornado and some students claim to hear voices coming from the empty gym. Other students point to the 1974 funeral held at the gym or the cemetery behind the school as the reason for the haunting. Another story claims that a construction worker died when the school was built and now haunts the band room. Some people also see the ghost of a boy with a tuba standing by the window of the band room.

At the Evarts High School in Evarts, Kentucky students hear noises and see dark shadows walking through the band room. Legend claims that the janitor of the school died there under mysterious circumstances. Meanwhile at the Feds Creek High School, water and televisions turn on and off on their own. The Simons Middle School in Flemingsburg is haunted by the ghost of a man who likes walking around the auditorium.

Students also like to tell stories about Highlands High School in Fort Thomas, particularly those surrounding David Cecil, who once attended the school. Legend says that he was injured during a football game and actually died in the band room. The band room suffers from electrical problems, cold spots, doors that lock on their own, door handles that shake and the ghost of a teenage boy sometimes seen through the windows.

The Hart County High School in Munfordville is also the center of stories. There always seems to be weird things and accidents happening here, along with more ghostly things such as doors opening or closing on their own and electrical problems. Owensboro's High School is haunted by the ghost of a young boy named Johnny. Johnny supposedly died when he fell down the elevator shaft when the school was being built. People claim to hear the sounds of him playing with his blocks late at night.

Students also tell stories about the Owsley County High School. Legend says that a janitor killed a student in the 1970s by hanging him in the locker room, only to die the same way exactly one year later. Stories say that both men now haunt the building, writing things on the walls and walking through the halls.

At Riedland Middle School and High School the ghosts of someone walk through the halls and open the doors. These ghosts also like playing with the lights. The Prestonsburg High School is supposedly haunted by a man killed in the building who makes his presence known by moving through the halls and making noise. The ghost of a man (or student) who accidentally cut off his hand in the 1950s when using a table saw in shop class haunts the old Raceland High School, but only appears at night.

Ghost hunters can also check out the Bullitt Central High School in Shepherdsville. Legend says that the land under the school was once used for public executions and people now hear others talking and waking through the gym of the school as well as playing with the lights. There's also the Larry A. Ryle High School in Union where a man died when the auditorium was built by falling from the scaffolding. Students now hear screams and see the fall happen again from the corner of their eye.

Haunted high schools exist in all areas of Kentucky, but these stories are just one small part of the many ghosts found in the state.
