A Guide to Haunted Houses in New York State

What is more fun than trick or treating? Haunted houses! What better way to spend the day with family or friends than scarring everyone? This article serves the purpose of a New York haunted house guide to the hot spots for this year's Halloween season. Whether you live Upstate, in the city or the tri-state area you will not want to miss these New York haunted house events and more.

1. Manhattan, NY: Central Park will be hosting several free events for those who want to celebrate Halloween with the kids but are on tight budgets.

Pumpkin carving with families:

October 23rd from 2:30pm to 4:30pm

Located at the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center

Pumpkins will be featured in the annual pumpkin sail!

Halloween Parade and Pumpkin Sail:

October 25th from 3pm to 6pm

Located at the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center

There will be spooky storytelling, pumpkin crafts, live music, and best of all candy!

Spooks at Belvedere: The house is open every Fri, Sat and Sun from September 26-Halloween. A haunted house in NYC! Spooky castle time! For more information about the free events in Central Park you can visit the website www.travelwithkids.about.com.

2. Staten Island, NY: Staten Islanders will be getting twice the horror and fun at the Greenside Up Nursery. Both locations will be hosting a New York haunted house event every Friday to Sunday during October and the first two days of November.

The Veterans road location will be hosting the Slaughterhouse.

The Hylan Blvd location will be hosting Trapped in Purgatory.

Their hours of operation will be on Friday and Saturday's from 7pm to 11pm, Sunday's from 6pm to 10pm.

During the regular week the haunted house will be open without the actors from 8am to 7pm.

Daytime ticket prices are 7 dollars for general admissions.

Nighttime ticket prices are 13 dollars for general admissions and 20 dollars for combo ticketing for the

Slaughterhouse and Trapped in Purgatory.

Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at their website www.trappedinpurgatorynyc.com.

Ticket prices and hours of operation are the same at both locations.

3. Manhattan, NY: The Bloody Manor is back and better than ever. It is one of the top haunted houses in New York and it is right on the west side of Manhattan.

It is opened on the following days in October: 2-4; 8-11; 15-18; 22-25; 27-31, and in November 6th and 7th.

On Friday and Saturday's the Manor's hours of operation are from 7:30pm to 2am, Thursday and Sunday's from 7:30pm to 12am. From October 27th to 31st the hours are from 7:30pm to 1am.

General admission ticket prices are 25 dollars online or by phone plus a $3.50 handling fee. Their number is 1-(877) 340-3002 and the web address is www.bloodmanor.com

General admission tickets can also be purchased at the door, cash only, for 30 dollars and tickets are limited so arrive early.

The Bloody Manor is not recommended for children under the age of 14. Those who are old enough must go with an adult.

4. Bayville, New York: Bayville Screampark in Long Island, New York has something for everyone. There are five main attractions: The Bloodworth Haunted House, Uncle Needles Funhouse of Fear, The Temple of Terror, Zombie Pirates and Evil in the Woods. They have been voted the scariest haunted house 3 years in a row!

The Screampark opens up on September 10th. Their hours of operation are on weekdays and Sunday's from 6pm to 10pm and Fridays and Saturdays from 6pm to 12am. Haunted house attractions open at 7pm.

Ticket prices:

$13.75 for each of the five attractions

Combo packs:
2 attractions: $23.75

3 attractions: $30.75

4 attractions: $36.75

5 attractions: $39.75

Events for the Kids

Kid's "not so scary" days feature the same attractions with no actors and less effects.

The hours for these days are Saturday and Sunday's and Columbus Day from 11am to 6pm.

5. Beacon, NY: The Beacon Halloween Festival is another great spot to be at this Halloween. They have four main attractions:

The Beacon Screamery:

This year's feature is the Insane Asylum where the Beacon Paranormal Investigators will take you on a tour of the old Beacon Asylum to see what lurks behind the walls.

It is open every Friday thru Sunday from September 26th to Halloween.

Ticket prices:

Adults: $6.00

Kids: $3.00

Re-entry: $3.00

The Zombie Walk:

Will take place on October 25th at 7pm.

This is where you get the opportunity to dress up like a zombie and march down Main Street.

There is a $10.00 registration fee, including a discount ticket to a party later that day.

The Hocus Pocus Parade:

Will take place on October 26th at 1pm

To be in the parade you must arrive at 12pm and is free for anyone in costume.

Trick or Treating on Main Street:

This event will follow the conclusion of the parade.

Participants receive discount tickets to the Screamery!

    Each year in Buffalo, Frightworld opens in a large indoor building and contains several haunted house attractions with various themes. A cool concept, but way too scary for younger kids.
