Learn a Little History

Deb Evans
A history museum rich in architecture and art is the High Museum of Art. Originally founded in 1905, known then as the Atlanta Art Association, it gained its first permanent home in 1926. Mrs. Joseph High donated the High family home on Peachtree Street. The museum moved to a brick structure near the High home. The High Museum of Art was at the center when the Atlanta Memorial Arts Center opened in 1968.
A stroll through the High's permanent collection is a trip through time. There are more than 11,000 pieces in this collection. It includes both 19th and 20th century pieces of American and decorative art, photography and African and folk art.
