Tucson, Arizona, has several summer festival and events where families can spend time with their children and enjoy the arts. They give residents a chance to get to know the city and escape from the oppressive heat. Most of them don't cost a lot of money or are free of charge. The following is a list of a few events and festivals that you may want to check out.

2011 Summer Saturday Evenings

The 2011 Summer Saturday Evening occurs from June-August from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. The weekly events consist of live animal demonstrations about desert creatures such as bats, rattlesnakes and scorpions. You learn about desert plants such as agave, as well as plant and flower pollination. The museum also hosts an astronomy night, where you learn about stars, asteroids and planets from an astronomy expert. Admission to evening events start at $7 for adults and $3 for 6- to 12-year-old children, and children younger than five get in for free.

2nd Saturdays Downtown Urban Street Fest

The 2nd Saturdays Downtown Urban Street Fest takes place on June 11 and offers free activities for families, including live music and entertainment. The art gallery has free exhibits and restaurants offer specials. The Downtown Museum Passport Program includes a free dessert at 47 SCOTT if you get a stamp from the Children's Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and the Southern Arizona Transportation Museum. If you visit the transportation museum, go next door to Maynard's and pick up a cup of Isabella's homemade ice cream.

The 5th Annual Tucson International Children's Film Festival

The 5th Annual Tucson International Children's Film Festival occurs the last week in July, from Saturday the 23rd to Sunday the 31st. The event is free for the public and features a mixture of new and classic children's stories. The historic movie theater serves beer, wine and pizza. Movies start at 10 a.m. every morning.

Summer Safari Friday Nights

Summer Safari Friday Nights at Reid Park Zoo take place every Friday night from May 20 to July 8, 2011. You get to see zoo animals, play games, do arts and crafts, and have animal encounters with the zoo's animal ambassadors. It costs $7.50 for adults and $5 for children 2-12 years old, and its free from kids younger than two. Zoo members get a $1 discount.

La Mariposa Fine Art & Fine Craft Show

La Mariposa Fine Art & Fine Craft Show occurs at la Mariposa Resort from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 17. The event has free admission. La Mariposa is located on Tucson's east side in the Tanque Verde Valley. It sits in the backdrop of the Catalina and Rincon mountains and features mesquite and cottonwood trees. The art and craft show showcases the works of regional artists.

Summer is a time of year when most Tucson residents want to get out of the heat. The city has events in air-conditioned locations or at times of the day when temperatures are not as oppressive. You only need to spare a few dollars to enjoy these events and get to know the city of Tucson.
