A Guide to Making Grapevine Wreaths at Home

Grapevine wreaths are a plain, durable decoration that can be used for holiday or year round decoration. This article will provide a guide for making and decorating your own grapevine wreath.

Homemade Grapevine Wreath Craft Step #1, Obtaining Grapevine:

The best grapevine to use should be at least a quarter of an inch thick. Grapevines an inch thick or thicker should not be used as they are too rigid and do not weave well. You will need only a couple vines if the vines are thick or long enough. Select vines from an area needing to be cleared or find a fork in the vine and harvest half if you are concerned about impacting the natural ecology. Remove from the vine all leafy twigs. You can keep a few straight branches on and weave them with the main trunk. You can also remove them and weave them in later.

For this stage, wearing gardening gloves is recommended but not necessary, depending on one's preference. Decide how big you want the wreath to be, then "tie a knot" in the grapevine and tighten to the desired size. Remember that the grapevine wreath will expand roughly an inch in each direction, so size accordingly. The knot preferably should be in the middle of the grapevine, so as to allow you to weave each end of the grapevine with the least hindrance. Weave in enough grapevines so that the wreath has some thickness to it. For every foot of wreath width you should have 1.5-2 inches of thickness. Use your best judgment.

Now you will decorate your grapevine. When selecting decorations, using decorations that can be stuck into or wired to the grapevine wreath rather than glued, to allow for easy removal and replacement. Bittersweet, gourds, and dried fall plants work well for Halloween and Thanksgiving. Replace with a purple bow or ribbon for Advent, or go straight to the Christmas decorations using some pine greens, a nice bow, and a few cones. You can get creative and decorate for the other holidays, or just leave it plain. Other than using yellow, light green, and purple for Easter, there's no set color or theme for the holidays other than maybe a couple small flags during the summer, so you can get creative.
