Now, lots of people thought that mining was the best way to make money when RuneScape was young. In a way they were right. Sure, you can spend countless hours leveling your mining level until you can get some rare ores that sell for a lot of money, you could even use those ores and make bars to sell. You could even be crazy enough to make those bars into items and try to find some random person who wants that specific item.
Another way to make in-game money is fishing and cooking. More skills that take up more of your time to perfect before you could make some serious cash. Swordfish always sell for good prices, but they only get caught a fraction of the time using a harpoon. The real money is in the Lobster. Lobsters sell (as of today) for around 200gp each, but you can fish them and cook them for free. Quite a lot of profit for such a little pinching creature.
Sure there are lots of other things you can do to make money. Runecrafting is one, collecting and selling bones, selling runes, arrows lots of different items. You can even use combat (player-killing) to make some serious cash. The unfortunate thing is, this all takes a lot of time, which we often don't have. Some don't even guarantee that you will gain a profit.
Most all of these things have something in common: selling. RuneScape depends almost completely on its own economy. Merchanting is the real quick cash. Remember those ores? You don't have to mine them forever, buy them for as cheap as you can, get a lot saved up... sell them for as much as you can. You can even take ores such as iron, mix them with coal if you have the experience and make steel bars, which sell for more than the ingredients do when bought at their highest normal price. Not only can you do this with mining and smithing, but lobsters sell from 200-250 each (or more) which means if you have 1000 lobster saved up, purchased at 200 each, and you sell them in the right place quickly and easily for 250... 50000 profit right there.
Don't have the money to save up those lobster or ores? Well don't worry, you don't even need skills to make the initial money. Do the "Rune Mysteries" quest and go into the Essence mines in Varrock. Mine away my friend, as you will soon save up enough to purchase your own essence for 10gp or less, selling them for 20gp or more. Yes I agree that does not look like much of a profit (which most people will say in the game as well, why not sell for 10 and save time?) Well... because 10 isn't where the money is. Make enough money selling essence in varrock bank to move onto your other merchanting item at choice. You could even merchant everything at once if you wanted.
After you have enough money from selling those to buy most things you need to get around, you can continue selling those for more, or move on to the higher priced items like rune scimitars (buy 25k sell 30k) or even rune full armor which can sell from 150k to 200k depending on where you are.
Use this guide as you will and take from it what you want, just keep in mind: know your product. What does that mean exactly? I'll tell you. Food sells in spots that need food, like at the closest bank to the wilderness in the PK-ing world, or the ores and bars near a furnace or mine. Even check the forums for people trying to buy things, even if you aren't allowed to talk on them, you can still private message!
Happy RuneScaping and remember: If all else fails, check world 1.

Unfortunately your guide no longer is good--jagex totally changed the game up with the grand exchange and the trading limits. However there are a number of commodities, mostly members objects though, that earn me up to 100k per hour, usually while leveling up at the same time.
