Arts - Is you idea of a relaxing vacation hitting art museums and galleries? Plattsburgh has a broad artistic menu to enjoy. If you are a bit of an artist yourself, a trip to The North Country Cultural Center for the Arts is a must. Art classes are offered for both adults and children, including figure drawing lessons. There is also musical performances and theater workshops for kids. The NCCCA is open Mondays through Fridays 9am to 4pm, Saturdays 11am to 4pm, and they are closed on holidays.
Also be sure to check on the Plattsburgh SUNY campus' SUNY Plattsburgh Art Museum. One of the highlights is their Rockwell Kent collection.
History - If you are a history buff, then you'll love Plattsburgh's historic sights. Plattsburgh boasts many historic War of 1812 locations in connection with the Battle of Plattsburgh, which occurred on September 11, 1814. The Kent Delord House Museum was the British Headquarters in that time, and now is a self-guided tour museum that is furnished in Victorian style. Find it at 35 Cumberland Avenue in downtown Plattsburgh.
At City Hall, you can find the anchor from the British ship "Confiance", which was found by divers in Lake Champlain in 1996 and restored after 182 years. See the anchor and learn how the Confiance played a pivotal role in the Battle of Plattsburgh in this ornate display.
And any history buff interested in the War of 1812 will certainly want to spend some time at the War of 1812 Museum, located at 31 Washington Road, Plattsburgh. Dedicated to teaching the importance of the War of 1812 in American history, the museum hosts events, has programs for children as well as adults, and contains an "Interpretive Gallery" of artifacts. It also contains a diorama of the battlefield in Plattsburgh so visitors can visualize the progression of events.
Nature - Lake Champlain is an ideal location for water activities - boating included. With sixty varieties of fish (including Salmon), any fisher is sure to have a good time angling in this beautiful fishing locale. The beaches in Plattsburgh are breathtaking, clean, and best of all, quiet and not crowded, so you can enjoy a day at the beach in peace. After your day of boating, fishing, or beach bumming, you can enjoy a great meal at one of Plattsburgh's waterfront restaurants. After dinner, take a leisurely stroll through the neighborhood and enjoy the historic architecture and stop by some of the quaint little shops. And you never know when you might have a sighting of "Champy", the Lake Champlain equivalent of the Lock Ness Monster.
