A Guide to Selecting the Best Pull-up Bars

Jason Cooley
Despite previously being restricted to play grounds and gyms, the pull-up has been one of the most recognized exercises. The pull-up is a simple exercise that requires a special piece of equipment to perform. The equipment needed is very straightforward and basic but will still cost you at least $20 for the ability to perform this single exercise in your home. The pull-up bar industry has always offered the same thing so choosing a pull-up bar for your home has always been very easy. Recently, the pull-up bar industry has heated up with competitors adding a couple of extra features to separate their product from their competitors, making the pull-up bar buying process much more difficult than it has been in the past. Don't worry, once you break it down and identify what you want the selection process becomes a very simple matter to handle.

When shopping for a pull up bar the first thing you need to consider is, do you care about drilling holes in your doorframe?

If you own your house, you are able to come to this decision on your own, but if you are a renter, your property owner may make the decision for you. Another thing to consider is do you mind having a pull-up bar up all the time or would you rather be able to put it up and take it down for certain situations? If you do not want or cannot have a permanent pull-up bar hanging in your doorframe then you will want a pull-up bar that you can mount quickly and easily without any drilling or screws, such as the Iron Gym which you can find for $30. The Iron Gym also comes in an advanced version that will run you an extra $10 but I'd save the money and go with the basic version.

Gold's Gym sells their iron pull-up bar for only $20. They also sell this pull-up bar in a $40 kit that includes worthless accessories that are not worth doubling the price.

For those of you who are fine with drilling holes in your doorframe, I recommend the Perfect Pull-up Bar. When it comes to drill mounted pull-up bars, the Perfect Pull-up Bar is the only one that stands out in front of the pack. It offers an additional angle for beginners to perform a modified pull-up where you are not lifting your entire body weight. The Perfect Pull-up Bar only costs $20, which is the going rate for most drill mountable pull up bars. So, if you are ok with drilling holes in your door frame the Perfect Pull-up Bar is the absolute best value.

For those that don't want to drill holes but cannot perform a pull-up, the Perfect Pull-up does offer the option of only lifting a portion of your body weight but with any door mounted pull up bar you can always stand on a chair with one leg and perform a calf raise with your pull-up. You can concentrate on how much upper body to use and how much calf to use. Once you feel strong enough you can move on to a total upper body pull-up.

I can't write this in the third person... I just can't. To do so would make me feel like a douche big enough to accommodate Madonna. My articles are a change of pace from what you can expect anywhere else. M...  View profile
