A Guide to Selling on eBay

If you're looking to earn some extra money and get rid of some of the extra stuff in your attic to clear up space then eBay is the site for you. The e-commerce website provides you with an easy and fair opportunity to sell items to other users for a very small fee. There is no limit to the amount of merchandise you list on eBay, and many people use the website as a second source of income. However, there are a few ways to get ahead of the competition and be successful at selling your products on eBay: Here are a few of those ways:

Research the competition.
If you've got a product you're thinking about listing on eBay, spend a few minutes to research similar products that are already being offered. The points of interest are price, shipping, and activity. This will give you a good indication as to what you should set your price, as well as the shipping rates. I recommend pricing your product slightly lower than that of the competition just to get ahead. This will, in return, draw interest to your listing and you could spark multiple bids. It's also important to consider if the other products have had any bids during their auction term.

Consider the season.
You always want to list an item when it is in its peak demand season. For instance, Christmas related items will obviously sell for much higher prices in the months leading up to the holiday as opposed to during the summer season. You may want to consider waiting to list an item that is in an off season and there's not much interest in it at the moment.

Make it easy for them to pay you.
If you broaden the payment requirements then you'll open the door to more prospective bidders. For instance, most people buying on eBay use the services of PayPal.com. However, if a buyer that is interested in your product doesn't have a PayPal account and this is the only form of payment you accept then you're automatically turning away their money. The more payment options you have, the more bidders you will have on the product.

Write an attractive headline phrase
The headline phrase is the one line that describes the product. I can personally tell you that I have skipped and bought items on eBay simply because I was lured in by the headline. What you want to do is include all of the important keywords that can be found when a buyer does a search. For instance, "Brand New In Box Silver plated Designer Picture Frame" is a great title because searchers can pick up on any one of those keywords.

Add a nice picture.
Stimulate the bidders visually by a captivating picture. Besides the description, the picture is the one thing that makes us want to buy the product. Buyers do not want to buy something that they cannot see. People like to see things before they buy them, and having professional quality photographs is guaranteed to increase your traffic and spark multiple offers.

Positive Feedback.
One great thing about eBay is that it has a rating system for all viewers. Once an item has been sold, the buyer then has the chance to evaluate the product and whether or not it was shipped with proper materials. If a seller has a consistent record of positive feedback, then buyers will feel more comfortable bidding higher prices on a product. For the first twenty or thirty items I recommend shipping smaller, lower priced items so that your feedback scores will go up.

Write a great description.
Along with a powerful picture, the description of your product needs to be accurate and very attractive. Do not lie about your item or mislead a buyer. The trick to writing a strong eBay listing is to do an Internet search about the product and customize your listing with the product description provided on the company website. Write your description as if you were putting it as an ad in a large newspaper.

  • Write a catchy headline phrase full of keywords.
  • Have a nice picture of your product.
  • Spend the time to build up your feedback numbers.
Selling an item in a season where there's not much demand for it could hurt your pricing.
