Nowadays, 80% of Americans have computers and/or internet access. Online shopping has become a huge pastime and an even larger industry for all of us avid computer users. Online shopping not only provides the convenience of shopping from your own home, but also can show you an array of products with a few simple clicks with a lot more variety rather than driving all around town looking for whatever it is you need.

However like anything else in this world, online shopping has its pros and cons, advantages and disadvantages. Online shoppers should always be careful for numerous reasons. Although the shopper may feel anonymous online, they are not always anonymous, and with every click the retailer learns more about them. Also, when giving out your email address you are opening the doors for the companies you shop from to send you coupons, newsletters and emails that can fill your inbox. Lastly, shoppers need to be sure that when they pay for their goods and/or services, they are doing so with the most secure method, to avoid identity theft and fraud from happening to them.

Online shopping does have a large number of advantages to the shopper as well. Most people can find what they are looking for online easier than that of shopping in the local retailers or department stores. The variety of products is also much more varied than that of shopping in your town, as the market is a global or national one, the choices are almost endless. Another benefit is when you are shopping on eBay or other auction type sites the prices are negotiable, which brings back the fun aspect of haggling for the products you wish to buy! Lastly, and most importantly, items are usually lower priced due to the boom in the internet shopping market, and the cornucopia of auctions and individuals selling online.

Additionally though, there are some things that shoppers need to look out for when they are buying products or services online. Shipping costs transpire nearly
85% of the time, sometimes causing the clearance or sale item to return to the price that would be found at a local store. Another fact shoppers need to be aware of is that sellers on bid sites and auctions may not always be honest with their merchandise. Pictures, descriptions, and sometimes items themselves will be talked up or phony in order to get the goods sold. Another issue is the fact that refunds are not always possible when shopping online, especially when dealing with individual sellers. Lastly, payment devices may not always be secure, which is dangerous for those con artists and thieves to gain access to shopper's personal or financial information.

Shopping online can be highly useful and very convenient, however, the shopper needs to be aware of the dangers of internet shopping and take the necessary steps to protect themselves. When you are shopping online you should carefully think about the benefits and disadvantages before making a decision. Let your wisdom and intuition guide you, and when id doubt, simply click away from the page and go to your local store.
