A Guide to Texas Scholarships

Stephanie Mojica
Texas scholarships are typically available only to residents of the state, and most are open only to graduating high school seniors planning to attend a four-year college or university. But current college students can still find some Texas scholarships that may apply to their programs. High school students planning to pursue trade or technical training can also apply for some Texas scholarships. Financial need is often required but not always expected, and most scholarships do require attendance at an accredited Texas educational institution.

The Baccalaureate Scholarship is available for current high school students who are also members of a Texas 4-H club. Applicants can pursue any major, but must plan to attain a bachelor's degree from a Texas college or university. Additionally, 4-H members pursuing these Texas scholarships must have been active for at least part of their senior year of high school and scored a minimum of 1350 on the SAT or 19 on the ACT. There is no minimum GPA requirement, but the program does expect the student to provide information about any high school activities outside of the 4-H clubs. Financial need and leadership skills are also factors in the judging process. The number of scholarships awarded varies each year, but typical grants range from $1,500 to $15,000.

The Career Colleges and Schools of Texas Scholarship Program is available to graduating high school seniors who plan to attend a trade or technical school in their home state. No minimum GPA is required. The number of awards varies each year, but eligible applicants usually receive $1,000. Applications are accepted through the specific trade or technical school the student plans to attend or the student's high school guidance counselor.

Dallas Morning News Annual Teenage Citizenship Tribute offers scholarships for graduating high school seniors from Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hunt, Kaufman, Rockwell and Tarrant counties. No minimum GPA is required, but student applicants must complete an in-person interview with that year's panel of scholarship judges. The program also evaluates each applicant's academic record, community service history, extracurricular involvement, leadership skills and demonstrated commitment to finishing a college education. Twenty awards ranging from $500 to $2,000 are offered each year. Scholarships may be renewed provided the student makes satisfactory academic progress once in college.
