A visit to Syracuse, is a trip to the heart of New York. Located in beautiful upstate New York, this city is often referred to as the "Salt City" due to the Onondaga Lake salt production long ago. These days Syracuse has much to offer tourists. As someone who grew up in this city, I can attest to the diverse events and landmarks to visit. From fairs and museum to parks and concerts, you are bound to find some fun family activities, all summer long.

Getting to Syracuse is easy. Just book a flight into Syracuse Hancock International Airport. Or arrive by automobile driving the New York State Thruway I-84 using exits 34A and 36 for north west traffic, and exits 39 and 36 for south east travelers.

Accommodations in the Salt City can be provided by hotels such as Marriot, Best Western, and Holiday Inn, plus many others. There are bed and breakfast inns located in the city and surrounding areas. For those that prefer an adventurous outdoor stay, try camping in a tent or RV at a nearby campground.

Summer in Syracuse can be loads of fun. Onondaga Lake is a wonderful gathering place. A stop at the Salt Museum is a must. It gives visitors a history of the city and shows how the lake once provided the nation with salt. For details and museum hours call (315)453-6715.

Onondaga Lake Park also features Central New York's largest play space. It has a skatepark for skate boarders and BMXers. Bike and skate rentals are available, call (315)453-6712 for more information.

Late summer brings the annual New York State Fair to Syracuse. Residents and people from all over the state attend the Fair. In 2008, the State Fair runs from August 21st to September 1st. There is plenty of parking, shuttle service and even a RV area available. Highlights of this event are the agricultural and technology exhibits, thrilling rides, food vendors and a star studded concert series.

Throughout summer, the city of Syracuse offers events such as a jazz festival, car shows, concerts, craft shows and of course wonderful events at Syracuse University. Tour historic Armory Square, or the Erie Canal. For a free guide, call the Syracuse Convention and Visitors Bureau at (800)234-4797.

The city of Syracuse is a very warm and welcoming place to visit. With the rich history, events and places to enjoy, it is a great summer get-away for folks of all ages.
