A Guide to the Types of Professions in World of Warcraft

In World of Warcraft, if you're trying to earn gold than the best way to do that in the fastest amount of time is often by leveraging your profession and selling the output at the auction house. All professions, when fully leveled, will generate a significant amount of gold; however, some professions have the ability to garner more gold from their output than others. This ability to generate gold is often a factor of the usability of that profession's output. In the case of leatherworking and blacksmithing, the goods that are generated can only be used by certain classes, and the materials required for the construction of those goods is often expensive and less you have a prerequisite profession such as skinning for leatherworking and mining for blacksmithing. In the game, we can separate the professions that your character can have into two categories: primary professions (the gathering professions), secondary professions (the crafting professions), and tertiary professions (professions such as first aid and fishing which serve to help you).

The primary professions that you can train and at your discretion include: mining, scanning, and herbalism. These professions are important because they often times don't require anything besides a simple tool. Additionally, there is no need for you to go anywhere special in order to gather materials using these professions because you'll often find them in the course of leveling or completing quests. On top of this, these materials that you gather can be used for multiple professions and therefore garner a huge amount of value when being sold at auction because of their versatility.

Secondary professions and world war craft our professions that use materials gained through the gathering professions to craft items that can be used by different types of classes. These professions are very helpful especially at higher levels because they allow you to craft extremely powerful equipment that can generally be resold at the auction house for high prices. The one downside to secondary professions is that their output at lower levels is often worthless and that makes it much harder and more frustrating to level these professions to a point where they become valuable.

When considering the topic of gold farming, tertiary professions almost don't deserve a mention. While higher-level tertiary professions such as fishing and first aid will generate valuable output, is often more valuable to simply sell the input in the case of first aid, and instead of fishing your time can often be better spent by using one of the gathering professions instead.
