A Guide to Visiting Brussels in Belgium

Denise Larkin
Brussels in Belgium is a great city to visit. Well known for its Belgian chocolate, most people from the United Kingdom visit there for a long weekend break. Here are some interesting things that you can see and do if visiting Brussels.

Atomium - The Atomium is the most popular attraction for tourists in Brussels. It is slightly away from the city centre of Brussels. It is, also, an unusual shape and looks enormous from afar. Inside there are many escalators to take you up high to a museum and a restaurant. The views of the city of Brussels from the Atomium are astoundingly beautiful, so take a camera along. Open hours are from 10 am until 6 pm. The restaurant is open until 11 pm. At night, the Atomium is lit up with over two thousand lights giving a special show to tourists. It costs €11 per adult from the age of 18. For children under the age of 6 years and for the disabled it is free entrance. From ages 6 years to 17 years and students (with student ID) it costs €8 per person.

Mini Europe - This place is located near the Atomium. It is a park area with a collection of the most famous places in Europe, such as, Big Ben, Eifel Tower and many other places. It is a great place to take children or the family. Walking around Mini Europe is very enjoyable for anyone too. You will need at least 6 hours to walk around Mini Europe to see everything. It is open from 9.30 am to 6 pm and in July and August it is open until 8 pm. It costs €13.10 per adult and €9.80 per child.

The Old Town - You can explore Brussels' Old Town by foot. From downtown, you can make your way to the Grand Place, which is in the middle of the Old Town. The Town Hall will be the main point that you will see as you walk on. You will, also, see some medieval streets along with crooked old buildings and small unique shops. Some selling Belgian chocolate. At the square of where the Grand Place is situated, you can admire the luxurious ornate gold-trimmed guild halls and Italo-Flemish facades. Sometimes there is, also, a flower market in progress in this area or a free concert. It is one of the first places that most tourists visit in Brussels. On a sunny day or in summer, there are flocks of people walking around the Old Town, as nearby there are lots of bars, restaurants and cafes to visit.

The Museum of Modern Arts - If you like visiting galleries, then this one will be an enjoyable treat to visit. It is one of the largest art galleries in the world displaying fine art. It welcomes visitors for free on the first Wednesday of the month from 1 pm. There are 20th century paintings, sculptures and drawings to see too. They range from Fauvism to contemporary art and most are from Belgian artists. A very interesting place to visit for anyone interested in art.

Visit a brewery - There are interesting brewery tours in Brussels. If you love beer then this would be the place for you to visit. There is the Cantillon Brewery tour, which is run by family. They make Gueuze, a unique beer. The location is ideal too, which is just a 15 minute walk from Brussels' Grand Place or get the metro public transport system to get there. You will, also, be able to taste a real traditional beer, which most beer lovers will enjoy.

So, if you are thinking of taking a trip to Brussels then be sure to visit the above places!
