Colchester Castle
It will take more than a day to explore Colchester castle. There is the Colchester castle museum and a prison inside that is very fascinating to see. Tickets are valid for the whole day, so do not worry if you want to leave the castle to go outside for something to eat, as your ticket will get you back in again. There is a tour of the castle if you wish to join in and learn everything there is to know about this castle. The castle is open from Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and Sundays from 11 am to 5 pm. Entrance costs are £6.00 per adult and £3.80 per child.
Mountfitchet Castle
Mountfitchet castle is great for families. This castle has some great history to learn and is great for children. The castle is a national historic monument protected by the Department of the Environment. It is believed to have been an Iron Age fort and Roman, Saxon and Viking settlement. There is a medieval combat weekend held at this castle on 25th and 26th June 2011. You will be able to watch Knights in armour fight with swords and axes for the hand of a fair maiden. There is, also, a toy museum to explore at the castle too. The opening times are from 12th March to 6th November 2011 at 10 am to 5 pm. Prices for entrance tickets are £9.50 per adults and £7.00 per child.

Hedingham castle is another castle in Essex. There are many events that take place at the castle that will include Easter treasure hunts for April 2011, fancy dress parade and crafts. Also, take part in Hedingham's Easter bunnies and chicks hunt around the grounds. Find them to win an Easter egg. Children can come dressed up in an Easter outfit to be crowned as king or queen in the parade. You can even have a go at the Easter crafts! Opening times are from 10th April to 27th October 2011 from 10 am to 5 pm. Prices for entrance tickets are £6 per adult and £4.00 per child from ages 5 to 16 years.
Hadleigh Castle
Hadleigh castle is another historic castle, which is near Southend-on-Sea in Essex. This castle is a romantic ruin overlooking the Essex marshes. It was once known as an important fortress for protecting the approach to London via the Thames estuary. An interesting castle with lots of history and the entrance is free.
So, if you are thinking of visiting the United Kingdom, then be sure to visit these castles in Essex.
