Decorations
Decorations are the easy part. If you remember the end of the movie, Harry rushes to get to Sally by the time the clock hits midnight. She's at a huge New Year's party, so that's what our decorations will be. All of the usual, party hats and noisemakers. To add a little kick we are going to find or make some memorabilia that reflects the late 80s. I love 80s music, so this isn't going to be a problem for me. Otherwise, just make up a few ridiculous posters that reflect the end of that decade, and you are pretty much good to go.
Costumes
This is where it gets fun. The tackier the costumes you can find, the better. If you can find a bright blue dress with puffy sleeves and ruffles, then you've pretty much hit the jackpot. If you recall, this is Sally's dress at the end of the movie. Any tacky, bright and especially ruffled dress will work just fine for this kind of party. For the men, a plaid jacket or a tweed dress jacket will work.
In the movie, there are a lot of interviews with older couples talking about their marriages throughout the years. If a couple people are willing to dress like that, it makes it all the more fun. I have a couple friends planning on dressing as older couples, complete with tweed sweaters and long skirts. It should be a lot of fun.
Hair
This is, at least to me, one of the most important parts of the party. Meg Ryan's hair in the movie is pretty much epic. If you have a crimper, this will work perfect. If not, you can easily tease your hair to make it as large as possible. Personally, I think the bigger the better.
This is a fun, simple way to make New Year's Eve fun and safe for everyone. If you have a group of friends who are willing to give it a try, this should be a great idea for your party this year.

Post a CommentNope, my memory did not fail me. Sally's dress was strapless, a dark blue, with long gloves and she wore a simple necklace. She looked beautiful and not tacky at all, even if it was the 80s. Just to get your costumes correctly. Hope your party is fun and hope everyone dresses appropriately.
I guess my memory is worse than I thought! I think the dress Sally wore was NAVY, not bright. and was off the shoulder and sparkly. Not tacky at all. But I could be wrong.
