A Healthy Body Starts with a Healthy Mind

Convincing Yourself to Get Healthy

Patti Stafford

You know you want to be healthier, eat better and enjoy more physical activity, but you can't seem to do anything about it. You have to convince yourself to be healthier. It really does start in the mind. This will not happen over night, but it will happen if you are persistent.

More often than not, a healthy body follows a healthy mind. If you can't think healthy and positive, you can't get off the couch and get that body moving.

The same goes with food consumption. If you constantly think about the things you can't eat, instead of the things you can eat, you're more likely to give into cravings and sabotage your plans.

If you've had trouble sticking with a diet or exercise routine it may be time to start focusing on your thinking habits and change that first. You can do so by constantly reminding yourself that you need to eat better and get more exercise. It may take a few weeks, or maybe even months to sink in. Don't berate yourself for not doing those things; just keep telling yourself that you will. Before long you'll start to notice that your habits are changing. Maybe you'll pass up a cookie or grab some raw vegetables to snack on without really thinking about it. But, you have actually been thinking about it because you're in the process of changing your thinking. Your subconscious mind believes that you need a poor diet and to be a couch potato because it's been conditioned to believe that. You have to change that conditioning and change its mind, so to speak. You do that through repetition and emotion.

You can use motivational recordings, self hypnosis recordings or you can join community sites where health minded people hang out. The key is to start getting your mind ready for the body and lifestyle you want. Otherwise it's only going to sabotage any efforts you make. This is one of the main reasons for diet failure--because the mind wasn't properly conditioned beforehand. I should remind you that this is not a quick fix; this is a life long journey to better health.

When you join community sites you can read other people's progress and struggles. This is very good for keeping you motivated. You have people you can relate to and who relate to you.

How Does Your Mind Affect Your Body?

Being a pessimist not only affects you mentally but it also affects you physically and can end up being very painful.

If you're always looking at the negative side of things or thinking negatively, especially about pain or poor health, it only becomes worse.

I know, you're wondering how you can think positively about pain. No one said it was easy, but if you can force yourself to think about more pleasant things, over time, it will begin to change. I used to live with a lot of joint pain. One day I decided to just stop thinking about it, to stop giving it power over me. It didn't happen over night, but eventually I stopped having so much pain. I'm not completely pain free, but it's so much better now.

So, how can you change a pessimistic attitude and start thinking more positive about your health? It's not an easy accomplishment, but if you're fed up enough, you'll do what it takes. The key is to activity look for positive things and force your self to think positive. It has to be the forefront of your thoughts. It's an active process. You can't really decide to be positive and it happens like magic, it takes effort and persistence. It can take weeks or even months to become more optimist and positive. Don't stop trying just because you don't see immediate results.

Start listening to motivational speakers you like, socialize with other people who think positive and have a healthy outlook on life and keep telling yourself you can change your habits. Like I said, it's an active process that takes persistence. You can do it.
