A Hobby that Pays - Metal Detecting

Metal Detecting can be a great hobby to get into. Not only can you get your exercise while you are enjoying your hobby, it pays too! The first thing you want to do is find yourself a good quality metal detector. You can study online about the different brands that are available according to your price range. Metal detectors can be bought for a considerable cheaper price if you buy one used such as at an online auction.
After you have purchased your metal detector read the manual. Get familiar with the parts and controls your detector has. Practice using your detector with items you already have. Use different coins and rings to hear the detector's sounds. Get acquainted with the different sounds you get with each object you are scanning. Some coins will have a higher pitch sound while others are lower. You will get an idea of what you are digging for once you practice enough times.

Next you need a good digging tool. I use a small shovel, some people use a flat screwdriver. One thing for sure is to be careful when you dig because you don't want to ruin the value of the item you have found by scratching it with your digging tool. After you have found your item. Be sure and cover up your hole. You don't want to trip falling into it the next day. I on the other hand have a dog that after I cover the hole, he likes to dig it back up. So I have to be careful about covering up the dog's holes also.

Another item you will need is a small bag of some sort. You can get the kind that hangs like a belt, which makes it easy when you are digging to just slide your find into. An apron works to but make sure you have a way to close it well so you don't loose that treasure you just found. IF you do have an apron get one with two pouches, one for the treasures and one for the trash. That way you wont dig the trash up again and also save fellow metal detector friends from doing so.

Find yourself a coin collecting book. You will want to research the coins you are finding. Its so enjoyable to see a coin you find worth lots more than it's original value.

Expect to find all sorts of things, rings,coins,war relics,buttons and some items you have no idea what is. Thats when you have to start researching to find out what is that mystery item!

Metal detecting is definitely a hobby that I would recommend. It's so much fun and you get a work out while you find that buried treasure!
