A Home-based Worker's Guide to Time Management

Stormy Brooke Swain
Working at home is a great thought for most people, and in fact is a good way to make and save money, but what about all of the distractions? If you have a hard time managing your time, so you can get your work done, there is hope. Consider your family versus your work, decide on a schedule or not and start fresh daily, so you can keep working and be on time. Learning to manage time has a lot to do with motivating yourself to stay on track, these tips should help, but if you are used to procrastinating, then you should keep track of how many times you leave your desk and keep cutting that rate in half.

Creativity is the key to managing time and family. The reality is that no matter how much you want to be left alone, while you work, if you are in the home with other people it's probably not going to happen. If you can set your own schedule try spending early morning hours and afternoon or evening hours working, this allows your family to have you when they need you the most. Isolate yourself a few times a day, so you can get the most important things done and take breaks every hour, so your family feels like you are still available for their needs.

To schedule or not to schedule, that is the question. Sometimes setting a strict schedule will hinder your ability to manage your time properly. If you do have a schedule, don't make it strict, prepare yourself for knocks on the door and phone calls. It may be easier for you to manage daily goals instead of time, when you consider how much work you have to do in a day. Make a to-do list and check off the duties that are done, when you finish them. Don't have set times to have them done, but do keep an eye on the clock, so you don't have to work until midnight.

Keep a good attitude everyday, by starting fresh. If you are upset about being behind, it's harder to manage your time the next day. Wake up each day and treat it like your first day of work. Stay excited about what you do and work hard. Looking at each day as your first day, keeps stresses low and helps you accomplish your new daily goals.

Stay on top of everything going on around you and try to keep the pressure of being behind or not having complete silence to a minimum. Spending time during breaks with your family, following a duty list instead of a strict schedule and having a good attitude each morning will help you deal with working at home with time constraints. Keep an eye on what you should accomplish during the day by prioritizing work and family, so even if you are exhausted you allow yourself to succeed on a daily basis.
