A Homemade Family Household Chore Chart from Recycled Jeans

Learn how to make a pocket chart that helps organize and delegate household chores among your family. Here is a DIY craft guide on designing a homemade family household chore chart using denim fabric. It combines recycling with art and organizational skills to create a fun activity that many parents can share with their children.

Cut one pair of used jeans in half using scissors and then remove the inseam from both of the two pant legs. Select one of the opened pant legs to use as the base for your homemade family household chore chart. Set this "base" half aside and then remove the pocket from the opposite pant leg using scissors. Trace the shape of this pocket onto the remaining sections of your jeans using fabric crayons. This tracing step should help you draw three extra pocket shapes depending on the size and length of your jeans.

Add more pocket shape traces if necessary to match the amount of people in your household who will receive chore assignments. Cut out all of the pocket shapes using scissors and then set the remaining jean material aside. Label each pocket with one name from everyone in your household using fabric markers. Use all of your pockets to add labels, including the cut-out shapes, the pocket that you traced and the jeans pocket that remained in tact on your "base" half. Instruct family members to decorate their pocket using fabric paint, buttons, crayons, stamps sequins, photos or a combination of these art supply items. Add glue to the back of your cut-out jean pocket shapes, along the perimeter.

Attach these pockets to your household family chore chart base, making sure that they are at least three inches apart. Attach the denim chore chart to the side of your refrigerator using Velcro strips, after the glue on all pockets dries. You can also skip glue altogether by sewing all of the cut-out pocket shapes onto your chore chart base before decorating them. The finished pocket chart can also be attached to a wall, pantry room or interior doorway using Velcro or spray starch.

Label a group of index cards with one household chore each such as pet care, dish washing, bathroom cleaning, laundry, vacuuming or dusting. Place these cards inside of the pockets on your chart according to all family chore assignments in your household. Rearrange the index cards for this homemade family chore chart on a weekly or monthly basis, as needed.
