Depression may be caused by genetics, biochemistry, where the mood regulating aspects of the brain are not functioning correctly and situational depression, where external events such as breakups, death, family conflict or other external influences are responsible.
One of the more disturbing and very unpleasant aspects of long-term depression is thoughts and feelings of suicide. Most people never act on these sorts and you must remember they are just thoughts, however unpleasant. It is important to ensure that you have some form of company and to keep yourself safe, don't be afraid to use one of the many available helplines. The people there are trained professionals, and it is nice to have someone to listen to your problems.
There are many types of medication available for the treatment of depression, and unfortunately physicians are often all too ready to prescribe rather than understand and get to the root causes of the disease. If you are prescribe medication and are willing to take it ensure, that your physician informs you fully of any side-effects as a lot of these drugs can worsen symptoms and in some cases cause tiredness, memory loss and other debilitating effects.
Depression and the accompanying anxiety can cause excess levels of energy and exercise is a good way to help alleviate this however lousy you feel. Get out, have a good walk and fresh air. This will also help stimulate your appetite as poor appetite is often a common symptom of depression. There are various herbs that can help enormously.
One of the most common herbs used in the treatment of depression being St John's Wort for its calmative effect, as is Valerian Root. Arnica is also effective, but less widely known. Kava will ease symptoms and creates a mild euphoric state but is not recommended for long-term use. Lemon Balm is particularly effective in relieving nervous tension and the mood swings associated with depression and is also very good for the digestive system. These herbs are particularly effective for the treatment of anxiety. You should not try to self medicated with herbs, but rather visit a homeopathic practitioner.
Disrupted sleep patterns are common, and you may find self relaxation and hypnosis CDs. Very effective in gaining you much-needed sleep. When you find yourself having suicidal thoughts. It may very well be that you are internalising and by that I mean turning your thoughts inward. This is where a walk or exercise could be beneficial, but if you can't manage this, please go outside have a look at the sky and try to externalise your thoughts somewhat.
If a family member or friend mentions feeling suicidal, take it seriously. While they may not act on it, it is a call for help. Many years ago, a friend's father was always threatening to commit suicide to the point that the family ignored his threats completely. Yes, he did end up committing suicide.
Also helpful is to create a little mental toolkit of self-help techniques that work for you. And these may include breathing exercises, externalisation techniques and a circle of friends that you can call upon to just chat when you need to. The tool kit containing anything that works for you are most importantly, remember. There always is a lighter end of the tunnel. You just have to get through the day, and you will.
