A How-To Guide for Advertising in Forums

Michelle Hoffmann
Advertising in forums is an art form. We all know about forums, and we either love or hate them. They come in many different formats but the most popular is the topical type called the "open forum". This is the column under which "marketing" and "special interest" forums fall.

Then there are those forums which do not operate under the same rules and do not allow advertising or promtional posts. These are typically found within individual programs. They usually have very stern rules about what type of posting is allowed. Advertising other programs is usually not allowed. These forums are called business or professional forums.

Advertising in forums is about following their strict rules. Most do not allow blatant advertising and some even go so far as to disallow even mentioning a program, product or service in posts. With the exception of those that allow signatures. I'll go into more detail about that later.

So how can I use forums to advertise in, you may ask? It is possible to still advertise in forums. You first have to become well known as someone who knows what they are talking about, and develop friendly relationships within the forum. Now, you can talk to each other outside of the forum. Exchanging emails, instant messaging or even communicating via telephone can then become your method of communication.

Once you have been established within the forum, make sure you frequent it often. Become a known figure. Take an active roll in the community. This way, you become someone that people will trust, and they will want to work with you.

When you join, you should go into your profile. Most forums have an area called a 'signature box'. It is here that you can legally advertise. Be sure to read the rules of the individual forums and make sure that you are abiding by them. Advertising anywhere else in the forum will be considered spam and you will most likely be deleted and banned.

This rule must be respected. Especially in marketing forums. Because everyone there is trying to advertise and sell things, they have even stricter rules.

Remember, the main purpose of forums is to exchange information and ideas and create, build and grow friendships not simply go there to advertise your products/services.

Treat the forums with respect and you will become a person well known for their sincerity, knowledge and wisdom. Mistreat them and you will become known as a fraud, a spammer or worse.

I hope you use this information as you begin your successful journey into advertising in forums.
